Japanese Invasion of China
ImageInfoInfoJapanese invasion of China, also known as the Second Sino-Japanese war, was a clash that occurred between Chinese and Japanese troops near Peiping in North China. It took place because China began resisting Japan's expansion in its territories. This occurence had several impact, one of which is that the US issued economic sanctions and trade embargoes towards Japan as a response to Japan's aggression; this led the Japanese to eventually bomb Pearl Harbor. -
German Blitzkrieg
Blitzkrieg, a German phrase for "Lightening War", was a strategy Germany used to defeat its opponents through mobile forces and locally concentrated firepower. It happened because it was the most effective way to overpower the enemy. The impact is that it allowed for the easy defeat of the enemy before they had a chance to garner support or fight back. -
Germany's Invasion of Poland
At 4:45 am, approximately 1.5 million German troops invaded Poland, with the German Luftwaffe bombing the Polish airfields, and the German U-boats/warships attacking the Polish naval force. As Hitler claims, this massive invasion happened because it was a defensive action. To Hitler, the invasion of Poland would bring "Lebensraum" for the German people. One of the major impacts of the invasion is that it started WWII. -
Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was a code name referring to Germany's invasion of the USSR. Three great army groups with over three million German soldiers smashed across the frontier into Soviet territory. Hitler's reason for this was because he wanted the Ural Mountains. One of the major effects of this launch was that it was a turning point in the war, for the failure of Operation Barbarossa, to an extent, resulted in the eventual overall defeat of Nazi Germany as the German troops were weakened. -
Pearl Harbor
On 7/12/1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. It happened because of the ban imposed by President Roosevelt on the trade functions of Japan, especially export of oil, which gave a great set back to the Japanese economy and military. One of the major effects of this attack is that the US declared war on Japan. Then, when the rest of the Axis declared war on the US, the US began participating in total war. -
Bataan Death March
The Bataan Death March was a march in the Philippines of some 106 km that 76,000 prisoners of war were forced to endure by the Japanese military, during the early stages of World War II. It happened because the Japanese wanted to get rid of any opposition they faced from the Filipinos. One of the effects of the March is that America promised to avenge its defeat in the Philippines, and it did with the invasion of the island of Leyte in October 1944. -
Battle of Midway
This was a naval battle in which the US defeated Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was because Japan desired to sink the US aircraft carriers that had escaped destruction at Pearl Harbor; they also wanted to widen their influence by invading an island group,Midway - the US fought back through this battle. One of the effects is that the victory allowed the US and its allies to move into an offensive position; also, the threat of further Japanese invasion in the Pacific has been narrowed. -
Battle of Stalingrad
This battle was the successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad during WWII; it stopped German advance into the USSR. The battle was because the invading Germans saw the conquest of the USSR as it was a strategic point to launch further attacks. Thus, the USSR pushed the Germans out of their lands through this battle. An effect of this battle is that it halted the German expansion, ending Hitler's vision of a global empire. -
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was when residents of the Jewish ghetto in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, Poland, staged an armed revolt. This uprising happened because those people were against being deported to extermination camps. One effect of this uprising is that it inspired other revolts in extermination camps and ghettos throughout German-occupied Eastern Europe. Another effect is that an estimated 7,000 Jews died, while nearly 50,000 others who survived were sent to extermination or labor camps. -
Manhattan Project
The Manhattan Project was a US research project that produced the first atomic bombs. This project was exploited due to fears that Nazi Germany would build and use a nuclear weapon during World War II. One of the major effects of this project is the production of the first two atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. -
Operation Gomorrah
Operation Gomorrah, also referred to as the bombing of Hamburg, was a joint British-American venture. It was when the British bombers raided Hamburg, Germany, by night while Americans bombed it by day. It happened because the British wanted to avenge the London Blitzkrieg bombing. One of the effects is that it proved that Hitler didn't care about his people because he refused to visit the city after it was bombed, which gained the Allies more support from the German people. -
Allied Invasion of Italy
The Allied invasion of Italy was when the British 8th Army under Field Marshal Montgomery begins the Allied invasion of the Italian peninsula. On the day of the landing, the Italian government secretly agreed to the Allies’ terms for surrender. This invasion happened because it was hoped that these landings would draw German forces south، allowing them to be trapped by the later Avalanche landings on September 9. One effect of this invasion is that Italy surrendered to the Allies. -
D-Day (Normandy Invasion)
The term D-Day was used for the day on which a combat attack is to be initiated. D-Day/Normandy Invasion was an operation in which some 156,000 Allied forces landed on 5 beaches along the coast of France’s Normandy region. It happened because it offered a chance to free a large population from Nazi control and remove the area's many resources from their hands. One of the major effects is that this operation resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. -
Battle of the Bulge
What happened is that Hitler aimed to split the Allies in Europe by means of a surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp. This happened as Hitler wanted to make a repeat of what the Germans had done 3 times before – in 9/1870, 8/1914, and 5/1940. A major effect is that the Germans lost so many capable troops that there was no way their army could launch another attack on Allied forces, thus the battle ruined the German army and in essence brought about the end of the war. -
Operation Thunderclap
During the final months of WWII, Allied forces bombed the city of Dresden. The bombing was controversial because Dresden was neither important to German wartime production nor a major industrial center. It happened because the Allies claimed that with the bombing, they were disrupting important lines of communication that would have hindered the Soviet offensive. One of the effects is that the city turned to ruins with no impact on the war result. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The battle occurred when the US landed marine divisions on the island and were met by roughly 23,000 Japanese soldiers defending. The invasion of Iwo Jima happened as it stemmed from the US's need for a base near the Japanese coast. One of the major effects is that the Japanese lost their bases, which were important as they'd use them to scout for incoming Allies bombers. This meant that the Japanese were now vulnerable to any attacks by the opposing forces, putting them under grave danger. -
Battle of Okinawa
The Battle of Okinawa was the last and biggest battle of the Pacific War during WWII.The capture of Okinawa was part of a 3-point plan the US had to win the war in the Far East. The Battle of Okinawa took place because Allied forces wanted to capture an island near Japan to serve as a base for air forces. One of the major effects is that after the capture of Okinawa, the US prepared for the invasion of Japan.Yet, instead of invading, they dropped the atomic bombs, which led Japan to surrender. -
VE Day
Victory in Europe, or VE Day, was when both the US and Britain celebrated Victory in Europe. This celebration was because May 8th was when the German troops all over Europe put down their arms, and they surrendered. This day marked the defeat of the Nazi war machine. One of the major effects of this day is that it rejoiced the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces, thus officially ending war in Europe, and freeing the nations that were once under Nazi control. -
Dropping of the Atomic Bombs
6/8/1945 - an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s 1st atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. 3 days later, a 2nd B-29 dropped another bomb on Nagasaki. This bombing happened because P.Truman was warned by his advisers that an attempt to invade Japan would lead to great American deaths, thus they ordered for the new weapon to be used to bring the war to a quick end.One of the effects of the bombing was that Japan’s Emperor announced his country’s surrender in WWII, ending WWII. -
VJ Day
VJ Day, also known as "Victory over Japan Day", was the day in which Japan announced its surrender to the Allies. This day is celebrated because as Japan's emperor surrendered due to the atomic bombs that left Japan in a devastating state, it marked the end of six years of hostile fighting between major countries during the time period of (1939-1945). One of the major impacts of this day is that it effectively ended WWII with the surrender of Japan.
