Original 13 Colonies
The first 13 colonies that the US won through the American Revolution. The Declaration of Independence was the declaration stating that the the 13 colonies had right to break away from Britan because the king violated their natural rights. The American Revolution lasted from 1774-1783. It ruined the nation's economy by putting it in a large debt. -
Manifest Destiny
The belief that the United States had the right to colonize Westward to the Pacific ocean by right of God. -
Northwest territory
The section of land gained from the American Revolution, which included the states Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The requirements to become a state were that it had to have an education system, no slavery, a bill of rights, a population of at least 60 thousand, drafted its own constitution, and that it asked permission to join the union. -
Louisiana Purchase
The land bought from Napoleon Bonaparte of France. The land included the Mississippi River and the city of New Orleans, which were important to the U.S. economy because they were the main trading spots in Louisiana and North America, and could greatly improve the nation's economy. The land was bought by President Jefferson for about 15 million. This land more than doubled the U.S.'s size. -
Adams Onis Treaty EXTENDED
where the U.S. gained East Florida and Spain gave up claims to West Florida. Spain Gained Texas and the U.S. agreed to take responsibility for 5 million dollars of U.S. claims against Spain. -
Adams Onis Treaty
The southern states of the U.S. were upset with Native Americans in Florida because they were raiding their homes and bringing slaves back with them to freedom. They were also burning down and stealing property. President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to the Florida border. When he was there, he invaded Florida, which was an unconstitutional act because he performed the acts without direct orders from the president. Oregon Territory
The country that originally shared control of the Oregon Teritory with the U.S. was Britan. The U.S. was trying to avoid war over the Oregon Territory, so they signed a treaty with Britan. The U.S. states of Alaska and California were creaed out of the Oregon Territory. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue that the U.S. and Mexico argued over that led to the Mexican-American War was the annexation of Texas into the U.S.- Mexico still considered Texas part of its territory.The treaty that ended the Mexican-American War was the the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Under the Mexican Cession, the U.S. states that were created were California, Nevada, and Utah. It increaced the U.S.'s size by almost 25%. -
Gadsen Purchase
The U.S. agreed to purchase land under the Gadsen Purchase to fix the contintal boundaries of the U.S. to avoid Controvercy. The U.S. paid 10 million dollars for the land and the present day states of Arizona and New Mexico were created. With the addition of the Gadsen Purchase, the continental boundaries were now fixed, and the beleif of Manifest Destiny was now complete because the U.S. now owned territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. -
Texas Annexation EXTENDED
Texas was having trouble with its economy and with Mexico because its economy was based on farming and ranching. The state had very little cash and taxes brought in very little revenue, bringing Texas into debt. Mexico still considered Texas its property. The U.S. did not allow Texas into the union as a state because it supported slavery and there would be an inbalance of free and slave states. -
Texas Annexation
The word Annex means "to take control of." Americans moved to Texas because of cheap land and they could bring slaves with them. The Mexican government was now taking away their U.S. citizenship, making them obey Mexican laws, making them support the Roman Catholic church, and was preventing settlers from bringing slaves with them. Texas soon started a revolution and earned their independance and became a republic/ an independent nation.
