Originial 13 Colonies
We gained these lands by winning the American Revolution. The Amercian Revolution lasted nine years, 1774-1783. This weakened the United States economy. The Declaration of Independence is a big part of the Original 13 Colonies, this was a statement of the second Continental Congress that definds the colonists rights, outlining their complaints and declared independence the purpose was to prtect their rights. -
Northwest Territory
We gained this land because of The Northwest Ordiance, this territory includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. There was many rules before a territory to become a state, 60,000+ population, education, no slavery, permission, and Bill Of Rights. -
Louisiana Purchase
The Mississippi River and New Orleans were very important to our economy because it offered more room for the states to grow and this also helped with trade giving the United States money. Thomas Jefferson had purchased this from france for 15 million dollars, this doubled the size of the united States. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The Southerners were upset with the Native Americans because they were stealing and destroying their property. President Monroe had sent Andrew and his troops to gaurd the border to make sure they didnt cross, he then invaded Florida, this was unconstitutional. Since this had happened Spain and the United States agreed upon the "Monore Doctrine" stating that nobody could settle in North or South America. This gave us Florida And Spain got to have Texas. -
Manifest Destiny
This is the belief shared by many Americans in the mid-1800s that the United States was meant to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. The Americans and United States government believed god had given them the right to expand westward and take control of more land, this would make them politically, socially, and economically powerful. -
Texas Annexation 2
A republic is where the people rule and the do not have a monarch. Economically; Congress whated to annex/take control of Texas, but Andrew Jackson was concerned because Texas supports slavery. Texas was having problems with Mexico, because Mexico did'nt agree that its former province had become an independent country/nation. Since Texas was a slave state, they did not want to have Texas join as a state, Andrew Jackson did not want slavery to spread throughout the United States. -
Texas Annexation
Annex means to take control of land. Many people started to me to Texas because the government had asked them to, they also could be any religion. They could own slaves and that would never be taken away. The Mexican government had broke their promise and is now taking away slaves, everyone is catholic. They had to follow mexican laws/mexican citizens. Around the time of Texas becoming independemt, Houston's soilders had to retrest east, within 2 weeks the had a consitution similar to the U.S. -
Oregon Territory
The United States and Great Britian used to share the Oregon Territory. The Unites States was trying to avoid war at the time, so they signed the Adams-Onis Treaty with Great Britian. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, also parts of Wyoming and Montana were made out of this territory. -
Mexican Cession
The main reason the Mexican-American war started was because of one issue tha being the Texas land. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ended the Mexican-American war. California, Nevada, and Utah, most of New Mexico and Arizona, parts of colarado, Texas, and Wyoming were made because of the Mexican Cession. -
Gadsden Purchase
The United States was trying to avoid war, so they agreed to purchase land under the Gadsden Purchase, the United States also agrred because then the continential boundries of the U.S. would finally be fixed. We paid 10 million dollars for this land, which is now Arizona and New Mexico. Manifest Destiny- That the United States should expand coast to coast.
