    The act said that any slave owner, who thought a slave was running away, could bring it into be in front of the judge and the judge would say if it was a run away or not.

    Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to France to negotiate buying New Orleans. Napoleon did not need the land anymore but need more money to go to war with Britain. France then sold the US the land for 15 million. The size of the united states nearly doubles over night for a price of $0.03/acre.

    Acquisition of Florida - Treaty of Adam - Onis
    Spain owned the Florida territory. There were slaves that were escaping into the territory from Georgia. There were also Seminoles raiding land in Georgia. To fix this problem, the US sent Andrew Jackson to man the border. He instead invaded Florida. In the end, Monroe sent the message “govern or get out.” Spain decided to get out and we settled Florida territory.

    Maine and Missouri were added to the states. Maine was a free state and Missouri was a slave state. The significant about Missouri's southern border was that there would be no more slaves north of that border
  • Trail of Tears

    Andrew Jackson ignored the orders of a treaty with the Cherokee. U.S. troops rounded up about 15,000 Cherokee and put them in prison camps. Local residents burned the native’s homes. Troops then sent the Cherokee west in groups of about 1,000 on a path known now as the Trail of Tears.

    American settlers moved to Texas. They decided they did not want to be apart of Mexico anymore so they started their own revolution. After a bunch of fighting, Texas eventually won their revolution and became its own country. After 10 years the US decided to annex(add on) Texas as a state.

Once the news had gotten out almost everyone from every occupation came to the spot to get some gold. The “forty niners” had come into California seeking wealth and while that they had built up Northern California and San Francisco
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    This treaty was signed it ended the Mexican-American war. As a result, the border between Texas and Mexico was established as the Rio Grande river. The Mexican cession was also included which gave the US land which is now modern day California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.

    It went from independence Missouri to northern Oregon. The path wasn’t just one clear route they also had some shortcuts on the side of it. Not all the people who used it were going to Oregon. Some people were going to Utah or California. It was around 2000 miles. Pioneers used it and pulling the wagons were mules, horses, or oxen. Wagons would join together and travel in a line these were called wagon trains. They would bring food and hunt along the trail.

    Henry Clay had created the Compromise. The compromise affected the District of Columbia, California, New Mexico, and Utah. In the district of Columbia it was illegal to trade slaves. California became a free state, and New Mexico and Utah could be a slave states if they wanted.

    This second act was just a stronger act of the first one saying, if you helped a slave run away you would get a consequence. It gave people the power to make slaves return to their owners.

    Kansas and Nebraska were the states that had been added.This allowed the people in the regions to decide if they wanted slavery in there borders. They canceled Missouri Compromise, which stopped slavery north of Missouri’s southern border.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    It let people move west and allowed people to build new things making city and buildings. It allowed western migration. It gave a buyer 160 acres you had to pay a small amount. You had to be over 21 to own land and you had to build on and improve it for over a 5 year period.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    The two companies were Central pacific and Union Pacific railroads.The Union Pacific Railroads built westward of omaha and Central Pacific started Sacramento California and worked east from there. It made a 6 month trip to a 2 week trip from the east to the west coast. As they were getting goods out the US economy was expanding because the goods were getting out faster.
