Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality
George Washington declares the United States as a neutral state for the war between Britain and France. He also tells citizens to avoid all acts and proceeding which might contravene such disposition. -
Jay Treaty
George Washington sent John Jay to London to try and negotiate a settlement with the British. Jay managed to persuade them to evacuate forts on American soil. He also got them to stop ceasing American ships. Jay failed to win concessions on other American grievances which meant they could take Native Americans and slaves and hold them compensation. -
Washingtons Farewell
Washington retired in 1796. He warned the countrymen against the growth of partisan divisions. He also warned against long term alliances. -
Impressment of Sailors
British men would kidnap American seamen and force them to join the British military. -
Embargo Act 1807
This prevented American ships from trading to foreign countries. This cause business to colapse and people to loose money, especially the poor. -
Chesapeake–Leopard affair
British crew took over an American ship, the Chesapeake. They did this for revenge. People want to go to war with Britain for this but Jefferson couldn’t.Instead he passed the embargo act to try and stop this. -
War Hawks
The War Hawks were a group of Republican Congressmen who, at the end of the first decade of the 1800s, demanded that the United States declare war against Great Britain, invade British Canada, and expel the Spanish from Florida. -
Tecumseh
Tecumseh wanted to negotiate with the American Government to stop western expansion. His attempt failed and later he went north to ally with the British. -
Tecumseh
He joined British forces for the capture of Detroit and the invasion of Ohio. He dies in a battle against William Henry Harrison’s U.S. troops. -
War of 1812
With all the events that had happened previously it was bound for there to be a war between the U.S. and Britain. Britain wanted to restrict Royal Navy’s impressment of American sea, and their ability to gain new territory to add the states (mainly Canada). -
Treaty of Ghent
This was a peace treaty to end the war of 1812. The treaty was ratified by the U.S. Congress in February of 1815. -
Hartford
26 delegate joined in Hartford, Connecticut to discuss the impact of 1812. They did this to purpose constitution changes to lessen the southern and western states power. -
Battle of New Orleans
This was the last major battle of the war of 1812. The commander was General Andrew Jackson. American forces win the battle.
