Washington’s Proclamation of Neutrality
During the Britan and French War, Washington had wanted to avoid a war with either Britain or France. In an attempt to prevent conflict from arising Washington issued a neutrality proclamation that America would not act in favor of one nation. This proclamation also stated that any American who violated it would face charges and would not be protected if found violating this Proclamation on a different land. -
Jay Treaty
Due to increasing tension between Britain and America, George Washington sent John Jay to Britain in order to attempt to settle their dispute. The John Jay Treaty was made during John Jay's and William Wyndham's negotiations. This treaty was received very badly by the people due to its damaging terms. -
Washington’s Farewell Address
A letter to the American people about Washington not running for a third presidential term. Most political conflicts had calmed down enough to a point where Washington felt confident leaving the presidency to another person, and he didn't want the presidency to be seen as a lifelong term. -
Embargo Act
An act widely hated among all the people of America due to its harsh restrictions on both commerce and travel. This act restricted imports from Britain and closed ports to export their goods and import goods from Britain. This negatively affected the economy due to the lack of income coming from their unsold goods. -
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
Englishmen had stolen a boat and took refuge in an American boat called the USS Chesapeake. these escapes had boasted of their escape which alerted the British navy who later came to collect these men. The British had requested to search the boat, but the American commodore refused this request. This refusal resulted in the British boat HMS Leopard opening fire, killing and wounding several Americans who were unable to attack back. This defeat angered the Americans who wanted to attack Britan. -
Tecumseh 1
In an effort to unite the Indian tribes and stop White settlers from taking their land, he formed an alliance with Britain. The promise made from this alliance was that The native Americans help Britain defeat America, and then they would be able to become an independent nation under Great Britain's protection. -
War Hawks
They were a group consisting of members of Congress who wanted to wage war against Britain. -
Impressment of sailors
Over the course of several years, British naval officers kidnapped several American sailors off their boats and forced them to serve in the British Navy. -
War of 1812
This war took place when Britain and France were at war. Several restrictions had been placed in order to prevent Americans from showing partiality towards either french or Britain, though due to the Impressment of American sailors and restrictions from both Britain and France hurting the American economy, the War of 1812 eventually broke out. This war eventually ended in a draw, with the Treaty of Ghent declaring peace between American and Britan. -
Tecumseh 2
During the Battle of the Thames River, Tecumseh passed away during battle. With his death, the British had lost this battle which allowed America to gain northwest control. Soon after he died, his confederacy fell apart due to the Indian alliance falling apart. With his confederacy failing, the Britsh had lost a large amount of manpower. -
Hartford Convention
This convection took place over a series of secret meetings that lasted from 1814 to 1815. These secret meetings drafted stronger states' rights that allowed them to control their military and commerce. It also discussed its issue against the draft. -
Treaty of Ghent
signed between Ghent and Belgium, this treaty effectively ended the War of 1812. This treaty did not fix the initial issues that had started the war, -
Battle of New Orleans
Unaware of the peace treaty signed between Ghent and Belgium, the Britsh and America fought just outside of New Orleans. The British had lost this battle due to having to lost in the eastern bank and being forced to retreat from the western bank after losing Pakenham. Even though America had won this battle, it had no effect on the War of 1812 due to the peace treaty signed before this battle. This victory gave Jackson a large amount of support to win the presidency.
