    British deserters were being pressed into the Royal Navy. USS Chesapeake fired on and boarded byt the HMS Leopard off of Noroflk, Virginia. (cause)
  • Embargo Act (cause)

    This act was passed by the US Congress halting trade with foreign nations.
  • General Isaac Brock (Michilimackinac and Detroit)

    While many in Canada and Britain believed war could be averted, Brock began to ready the army and militia for what was to come. When the War of 1812 broke out, the populace was prepared, and quick victories at Fort Mackinac and Detroit defeated American invasion efforts. Brock's actions, particularly his success at Detroit, earned him a knighthood, membership in the Order of the Bath, accolades and the sobriquet "The Hero of Upper Canada".

    The War Hawks were a coterie of about twenty Democratic Republicans who persuaded Congress into supporting a declaration of war against Britain. Called "Mr. Madison's War" even though Madison was against it in the first place.

    The British continuously engaged in impressment and enforced US citizens to serve in the Royal Navy. Disputes continued with Great Britain over the NWT and the border with Canada. Also, Great Britain's blockade of France during the Napoleonic Wars served as a constant sorce of conflict with the US.

    Hull issued a proclamation saying that he came to liberate Canada from opression.
  • Brock attacks Detroit

    Brock attacks Detroit
    He was the British commanding officer of Upper Canada and on Agusut 15, summoned Hull to surrender.
  • Battle of Queenston Heights

    A British victory that turned back the first American attack on the Niagra front.
  • Laura Secord

    Laura overheard the Americans planning a surprise attack on the Canadian forces under FitzGibbons at Beaverdams and decided to get word to FitzGibbons of the planned attack, and set out at four in the morning to walk the 32 kilometres to the house where FitzGibbons was staying. She was captured by the Mohawks and Caughnawagas but persuaded them to take her to FitzGibbon anyways.
  • Americans Burn York (Toronto)

    One of the first American victories on land during the War of 1812. Two British ships were known to be based at York, and there was another 30 gun ship under construction. American commander-in-chief Henry Dearborn believed that the destruction of these ships would threaten British control of the lake.
  • Battle on the Thames

    Also called the Battle of Moraviantown by the British and Canadians, it was fought on Canadian soil and it secured the strategic Northwestern frontier from further attacks by the British and their Indian allies.

    Tecumseh (Tippecanie and Moraviantown or Battle of Thames)
    He was a Native American leader of the Shawnee and the Tecumseh's Confederacy which opposed the United States during Tecumseh's War and the War of 1812. With a vision of establishing an independent American Indian nation east of the Mississippi, Tecumseh worked to recruit additional tribes to the confederacy from the southern United States. During the War of 1812, Tecumseh's confederacy allied with the British in The Canadas and helped capture Fort Detroit.

    An armed conflict between the UK of Great Britain and Irelnd and the US. A British force set fire to many public buildings following the American defeat at the Battle of Bladensburg.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    Treaty of Peace. Restored relations between Great Britain and Ireland. Ended War of 1812.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    Final major battle of the War of 1812. Happened after treaty was signed and war ended. However, official dispatches announcing the peace would not reach the combatants until late February, finally putting an end to the war. The battle is widely regarded as the greatest American land victory of the war.
