Battle of Antietam

North and South that changed the course of the Civil War, helped free over four million Americans,
devastated Sharpsburg, and still ranks as the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. -
Lincoln Issues the Emanicpation Proclamation
President Lincoln has decided to take steps to end slavery in the southern states theat were still held by the Confederacy. Lincoln thought that if southern slaves were freed, they would refuse to work in the fields. As a redult, President Lincoln issued the Emacipation Proclamation. This was a public statement that freed enslave African Americans in the rebelling states, or the Confederacy. It said that on January 1, 1863, all slaves in the Confederate states would be "forever free." -
Vicksburg Falls
This was a Union victory. The southe is cut in two. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This battle took place in Pennsylvania. It was also a Union vicory. More soldiers were killed than at any other battle. -
Lincoln gives the Gettysburg Address
The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War. The battle lasted three days. Confederate troops badly beaten. Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln said the Civil War had to be fought to make sure that the "government of the people,by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." -
Lincoln Reelected
Lincoln is reelected. -
Lee Surrenders
By the spring of 1865, the Confederacy was beaten. Its armies were running out of troops and supplies. On April 9, 865 Lee and Grant met at a house in Appomattox Court house. They agreed to end the war. -
Lincoln Assassinated
Five days after the Civil War ended, President Lincoln went to a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. At the play, he ws assassinated by Johns Wilkes Booth who was a Confederate supporter.
