Essential Services Commission of Victoria release Smart Meter project plan
Essential Services Commission of Victoira (ESC) released Final Paper titled "Mandatory Rollout of Interval Meters for Electricity Customers", outlining the rollout timetable and implementation plan. Health and safety concerns are only noted in relation to installation and maintenance of devices. -
Rollout begins
Rollout of smart meters commenced mid-2009 (forecast to be completed by end of 2013) -
Auditor-General report
Victorian Auditor-General released report on "Advanced metering infrastructure", particularly criticising projects's governance. Technology risks were not considered in cost-benefit analyses. From the report: "The risk management approach was to rely on the electricity industry to address and bear technology risks. However, the regulatory regime does not give the industry enough incentive to manage risks and associated coasts that consumers are likley to pay" -

Reported that the program was expected to cost $500 million more than originally estimated, -
AMI Meter Electromagnetic Field Survey
Victorian Government released report completed by EMC Technologies to deterine if the electromagnetic energy from smart meters meet ARPANSA RPS3 limits. Report found exposure levels "well below ARPANSA RPS3" -
Victorian Ministerial Radiation Advisory Committee
At a meeting in March 2012, the Victorian Ministerial Radiation Advisory Committee stated its position in relation to smart meters that "there is no substantive evidence to suggest that exposure to radiofrequency radiation such as from Smart Meters can increase the risk of chronic health effects, such as cancer". -
Report from Energy Safe Victoria
ESV released draft report concluding that Smart Meters are safe and do not pose any greater safety risk than the meters they are replacing. -
