The king of Portugal sends da Gama to avenge the deaths of those slaughtered at a trading post in Calicut. He forced Calicut's ruleer to make peace and established more trading posts along the east African coast on his way back.

da Gama fell ill and later passed on. His body was buried in Portugal, 1539.
