    Civil War

    The South wanted to secede from the Union because they didn't want to stop/get rid of slavery. The Union wanted to stay together, but the South did not. Many ither factors lead to the Civil War and the secession of the South. When Lincoln was elected secession began because Lincoln was against slavery. The Civil War used new technology such as conoidal bullets, hot air balloons, ironclads, and telegrams. The North won the Civil War because they had more soldiers and supplies than the North.

    Reconstruction

    After the Civil War efforts to rebuild the nation began. Northerners that moved tot the south to gain government positions were known as carpetbaggers. After the War president Lincoln also offered a general amnesty, or pardon, to all Southerners who took an oath of loyalty to the United States and accepted the Union's proclamations concerning slavery. Slavery was said to have ended, but a lot of freed slaves were still slaves in away because of share-cropping.

    The Assassination of Lincoln

    A few months after declaring reconstruction of the nation, President Lincoln was assassinated. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while watching a play.
  • Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad

    The transcontinental railroad continued from the Eastern United States to the Pacific Ocean. It connected the United States and helped fulfill the Manifest destiny.

    The Gilded Age

    Era of increased technology and industrial growth that appeared to be good, but had underlying poverty and corruption. Named the gilded age because something that is gilded is covered with expensive materials, but made of cheap materials on the inside.

    The Spanish American War

    The Spanish American war was a war between the U.S. and Spain over the seeking of independence from Spain by the Cuban people. The U.S. was involved because many U.S. citizens supported Cuba and Cuban rebels.

    World War I

    War that occurred because of militarism and alliances and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. President Wilson wanted to keep the U.S. out of a European war, but many Americans took sides. The U.S. stayed out of the war for two years, but the sinking of the Lusitania, propaganda, and the Zimmerman Telegram forced the U.S. to join the war.
  • Scopes Trial

    The scopes trial was when a high school biology teacher was arrested for teaching evolution. The teacher was found guilty, but later got off due to a technicality. Even though the teacher lost the case, it helped push the ideas of evolution onto the public.

    World War II

    After WWI the U,S. tried to remain neutral and not become a part of European affairs, but the U.S. still became involved in the war, mostly because of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hitler was appeased and started gaining power/became a dictator. This lead to many different events such as the Holocaust, German invasion of various countries, and a Second World War.

    The Red Scare

    The red scare was a time of fear of communism infiltrating the United States. The fear was so great that McCarthyism was allowed to take place. McCarthyism was the unjustified searching and accusing of potential communists in the early 1905s.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor is attacked by Japan. The attack was a surprise and many vessels were sunk or damaged. This attack finally brought the U.S. into the war.
  • The Holocaust

    The German persecution and murder of about 6 million Jews and other peoples. Jews and other peoples were sent to concentration camps to work as slave labor or were sent to extermination camps that were attached to concentration camps. Those sent to extermination camps were executed in gas chambers.

    The Korean War

    The Korean War was a war between the North Korean communists and the democratic South Koreans. The North Koreans were backed by China and the USSR and the South Koreans were backed by the the U.S. The U.S. got involved in Korea because they didn't want communism to spread.

    The Civil Rights Movement

    The Civil rights movement was a push for African-Americans and other minorities to have equal rights/ the same rights as white people. The civil rights movement lead to the elimination of the separate but equal law, desegregation of buses and other public facilities, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

    The Vietnam War

    The U.S. got involved in the war in Vietnam because, once again, they did not want communism to take over a country or to spread. Ho Chi Minh wanted Vietnam to be an entirely communist country, but the U.S. and South Vietnam didn't want that. U.S. involvement in the war slpit the nation because some supported the war and others did not. To this day the waris very significant because we lost so many soldiers and the soldiers that did survive have many health problems still.

    Space Race

    The space race was a Cold War competition between the USSR and the U.S. to see who could conquer space first. The U.S. won't the space race because we put men on the moon first.
  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Failed mission to hoist Castro out of power in Cuba. Was an epic fail and was a huge embarrassment to the United States.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis is an event where the USSR placed long range missiles on Cuba and JFK demanded that they be removed. A negotiation was reached, but the U.S. wasn't too far away from a nuclear war. The U.S. didn't want the missiles on Cuba because having missiles on Cuba is too close for comfort for the U.S.
  • JFK is Assassinated

    While in Dallas, President Kennedy's presidency ended shockingly and tragically. Someone shot the president twice, but to this day it is unknown who has shot him. Reports made by the Warren Commision left many questions unanswered, but they declared the Oswald was the lone assssssin. JFK was president for little more than 1,000 days, but he left a profound impression on most Americans.
  • MLK is Assassinated

    Martin Luther King Jr. was shot while he was on his balcony at his hotel in Memphis. After his death the civil rights movement fell apart. The civil rights movement fell apart because MLK brought a sense of unity to it.
  • Watergate Scandal

    The watergate scandal was when a Richard Nixon's people had the Democratic National headquarters broken into. They broke in to get campaign information to try to get Nixon reelected, but they were caught and Nixon tried to cover it up with his political power. Nixon resigned when he realized that he would be impeached and could potentially face jail time. The watergate scandal was exposed by the press and the scandal lead to a wide distrust of government officials from Americans.
  • Clinton is Impeached

    Clinton was impeached for lying about his relationship with Monica Lewinksy. Even though Clinton was impeached he still stayed in office rather than resigning. (Basically Clinton ignored his impeachment.)
  • 9/11

    When Al-Qaaeda terrorists attacked the U.S. and killed over 3,000 people. Four planes were hijacked, two flew into the Twin Towers, on crashed into the Pentagon, and one crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks shaped Bush's presidency and made him a wartime president. The attacks united U.S. citizens and showed how resilient our country is.
