Potato Famine (1845-1852):
– A fungus or infection in the potatoes in Ireland, make a lot of people to die, others to immigrate to US.
– Increased the immigration to the USA, decreased the population on Ireland. -
Karl Marx/Comm Manifesto (1848):
– A pamphlet written by Karl Marx to promote the use communism in the world.
– Shows the problems of capitalism and the capitalist mode of production. -
Bessemer Process (1850’s):
– The process of making steel from iron through the molten metal.
– The start of revolutionary industries. -
First oil well (1859)
– A well from which petroleum is extracted.
– The man who discovered the technique of extracting oil was Edwin Drake. -
Seward Purchase (1867):
– The acquisition of Alaska from Russia.
– It cost $7.2 millions USD. People said that it wasn't worth it to buy it. -
Chinese Exclusion Act (1882):
– A law that prohibited Chinese laborers to 10 years and to prohibited Chinese people to become citizens.
– Security in the immigration of the West coast started growing. -
The New Colossus (1883):
– Poem that shows the feelings of an immigrant entering the US by Ellis Island.
– It tells the experience of European immigrants getting to America, the land of freedom. -
Rock Springs Massacre (1885):
– White coal miners killed Chinese because of job competition. (different pay salary).
– A lot of people die, burn up houses, and Chinese torturing. -
Hull House (1889):
– Was a settlement house for immigrants in Chicago. Founded by Jane Addams.
– Very popular site for immigrants to stay in the USA. -
How the Other Half Lives (1890):
– Jacob Riis, an immigrant photographer that took pictures of awful immigrants living conditions.
– This pictures impact lot's of americans citizens inspiring them to help this poor people. -
Homestead Strike (1892):
– Carnegie steel plant, Pennsylvania. Wages cut and the Pinkertons.
– A lot of gun fire and death between the officials and the Carnegie Steel workers. -
USS Maine explodes (1898):
– Was an US military ship in the harbor of Havana Cuba.
– On feb/15 of 1898 the ships explodes making the US think that it were the Spanish but at the end the find out that was an inside explosion. -
Annexation of Hawaii (1898):
– Hawaii have been having problems with England and its Hawaiian Kingdom making them overthrow the kingdom t in 1893.
– Years later President Mckinley attached Hawaii as part of the US making it the 50th state of USA. -
Philippines becomes a US Colony (1899-1902):
– Americans kept following the Manifest Destiny beyond their lands.
– US saw Philippines as a good place for trading with Asia taking it as a colony. Later Philippines gain independence. -
White Man’s Burden (1899):
– Was a poem written by Rudyard Kipling. The poem tell was is the purpose of the White people in this life.
– It tells that the job of White people is to teach the color people (Imperialism). -
Platt Amendment (1901):
– This amendment barred Cuba from making treaties with other nations.
– Gave the United States an American naval stations on its territory (Guantanamo Bay). -
Panamanian Independence (1903):
– After a war between Panama and Colombia, Panama got separated from Colombia with the help of the US military.
– US helped Panama independence because they saw it as an opportunity of constructing a canal across the country. -
Triangle shirt Factory (1911):
– Shirt factory in NY, doors locked to make sure workers (women) didn’t get out of the building.
– Public outcry gave the creation of labor unions, led to new safety standards. -
Ludlow Massacre (1914):
– A strike between miners and the company in Ludlow, Colorado.
– Some two dozen people, including miners' wives and children, were killed. -
Assassination of Franz Ferdinand (1914):
– He was assassinated by a Serbian citizen.
– It is one of the principal reasons why the WWI started (alliance). -
Sinking of The Lusitania (1915):
– A British passenger ship that was sunk by a German U-Boat.
– 128 Americans died. Was one of the causes why the U.S. to enter World War I against the Germans. -
Zimmerman note/telegram (1917):
– A coded telegram dispatched by the Foreign Secretary of the German to Mexico.
– It rage the USA making them go against Germany entering to war. -
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (1918):
– Was a peace treaty between the Central Powers and Russia.
– It marked Russia exit from WWI. -
Treaty of Versailles (1919):
– It ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers.
– A treaty at the end of WWI to determine what will the consequences to the losers and to prevent future wars. -
US rejects League of Nations (1920):
– The rivalry between the political parties in the US affected whether to sign or to not.
– At the end the US never enter the League of Nations because of internal problems in the politics.
