The time period between 1870 and 1920 was called the Gilded Age. It was a time of rapid growth economically as a country after the Civil War. Factories were becoming increasingly more common, and immigration was booming. -

This is a timeline from 1877 to 2011. There will be 20 items on the timeline, 15 being events and 5 being ideas. The ideas will be things like imperialism, for example. -
Chinese Exclusion Act signed
In mid 1882. the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed. This prohibited all Chinese laborers from immigrating to the U.S. This was signed due to extreme nativism in the U.S. at that time. -
League of Nations formed
At the end of World War 1, the League of Nations was formed. The main purpose of this was to prevent another war like WW1 from breaking out. They would also help each other in times of need, as well as solving global issues. -
Treaty of Versailles signed
The Treaty of Versailles marked the end of World War 1. It ended the fighting between the Germans and the Allied Powers. While it was enforced for quite some time, it wasn't long before the treaty was broken. -

Harlem Renaissance
Between the 1920s and mid 1930s, the Harlem Renaissance took place. This was a period of growth for African American culture in America. Things like jazz grew in popularity, and various African American writers and actors became famous. This was also the time of the Great Migration, which gave people from the south a new life in urban areas. -

The Great Depression
The Great Depression started when the stock market crashed. This was a time of rapidly increasing poverty and unemployment. When Roosevelt was elected in 1932, he did everything he could to help America. He ended up serving three terms, and during his third, the Great Depression came to an end. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
On December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was attacked by Japan, starting our conflict with them in World War 2. This attack came out of nowhere, and we ended up losing several aircraft carriers, ships, and more. We stayed strong as a country, and declared war with them. -
Hiroshima Bombing
The U.S. was able to create an atomic bomb using nuclear energy. This bomb was far more powerful than anything before, and we used it as a way to end conflict with Japan. We targeted Hiroshima, as several other cities were already getting damaged from the war. The bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945, and was the leading cause of the end of the war. -

Korean War
The Korean War was very important to the Cold War and the shaping of the two Koreas. The war started with North Korea invading South. The U.S. came to assist South Korea, while China and Russia came to assist North Korea. The war ended, and the 38th parallel was given much more security, as well as led to the official division of the Koreas. -
Little Rock Nine
On September 3rd, 1957, nine black students in Little Rock Arkansas tried to attend an all white school. Police prevented the children from entering the school, until a federal judge declared this illegal. The troops left, and the students tried to enter on the 24th. Again, troops came but then left on the 25th. The students were able to attend under supervision. -
Khrushchev agrees to remove missiles from Cuba
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a scary time period over the cold war. Because Russia had missiles in Cuba and we had missiles in Turkey, a constant threat of nuclear war was present. After negotiation between Kennedy and Khrushchev, all missiles in both locations were removed. -
Martin Luther King Jr. Killed
Martin Luther King Jr was a civil rights activist who fought for equality. He's most known for his "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered during his march on Washington. He wanted everyone, no matter what race, to be treated the same. Sadly, he was shot by James Earl Ray on April 4th, 1968. -
Cold War ends
In 1991, the Cold War saw an end. The Berlin Wall came down, and borders were opened again. The Iron Curtain was finally lifted, and our conflicts with the Soviet Union also ended. Thanks to Ronald Reagan and what he did for the U.S., the threat of a nuclear war and more conflict with Russia quickly came to a close. -
Bill Clinton impeached
On December 19th, 1998, the president of the U.S., Bill Clinton, was impeached. Because of controversies with him, especially his affair, the citizens of the U.S. felt he couldn't be trusted. He was impeached during his second term.
