Haymarket Square Riot
The Haymarket Square Riot was a riot during a mass meeting in Haymarket square following a police shooting of three factory workers. During the meeting, police started to charge the stage and a bomb was thrown into their midst. Seven police officers were killed, and five citizens were injured. (Module 2)

Annexation of Hawaii

William McKinley Assassinated
On this day, William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, was assassinated. He was assassinated by Leon Czolgosz, who shot him twice in the abdomen while he was meeting the public at the Temple of Music, in Buffalo, New York. McKinley died eight days later. (Module 3)

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of time in Harlem, NY, that inspired African Americans to embrace their culture and history and turn into all kinds of art, whether that be music, writing, acting, or poetry. One of the most influential things that came out of the Harlem Renaissance, however, was Jazz. Jazz revolutionized the music industry, and brought white and black people together in appreciation of music.

The Cold War was a state of tension following World War II, which involved the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc. The Western block was made up of the Soviet Union and its satellite states, and the Eastern Bloc was made up of the United States and its NATO allies. The Cold War is the closest the World has ever been to an all out nuclear war, with both sides having considerable nuclear arsenals. (Module 7)

NATO Formed
On this day, NATO, which stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was formed. The goal of NATO is to create a network of defence, and to ultimately protect one another from enemy countries. When NATO was first created, there were 12 member countries. Today, there are 29. (Module 6)

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a period of time in which the US and the Soviet Union had a confrontation regarding Soviet missiles in Cuba and US missiles in Italy and Turkey. This event was especially important because it was the closest the US has come to having a full out nuclear war. It can be compared to what is currently happening between the US and North Korea. On this day, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. This speech, given during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, would go on to be one of the most famous speeches in US History, and has caused a great change in society’s actions towards black people. (Module 8)

This year, the first McDonald’s in Canada was opened. This may seem insignificant, but it is one example of Americanization. Canada had just opened an American based chain, therefore spreading American culture. (Module 10)
