Development of the American Identity

The American identity is a product of a blend between the cultures present in colonial America. These cultures include Western ones, like English, German, and Scot-Irish, but also Polynesian, Latin, Native American, and African. These cultures have blended to form what today is known as "the American Identity". This has been going on for around 10,000 years. -
First English Settlement at Jamestown, Virginia

After the 13 colonies met at the Second Continental Congress, they decided that they should write a document to the British Crown requesting Independence. This document was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and signed by the delegates of the Continental Congress. -

The Signing of the Treaty of Paris

This event was a peace treaty signed by America and Britain, thus ending the American Revolutionary War. It also signifies Britain recognizing America's independence from British rule. -
Ratification of the Constituiton

After the long struggle to ratify the document that was to replace the Articles of Confederation due to opposition by the anti-federalists, the Constitution was finally ratified. This process was a truly strenuous one. -
Louisiana Purchase

Jacksonian Democracy

Andrew Jackson becomes President
After losing the presidency to John Quincy Adams in the 1824 Presidential Election, Andrew Jackson won in the 1828 election becoming America's 7th President. Jackson was one of America's most influential presidents. -
Manifest Destiny

This idea was coined by John O'Sullivan in 1845. It is used to describe the mindset that furthered the westward expansion in America. -
Mexican-American War

The U.S. Civil War begins

Emancipation Proclamation

The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

Five days after Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. He was killed by John Wilkes Booth, a white supremisist and slavery supporter, on Good Friday at Ford's Theatre. -
The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson

This occurred during the Reconstruction era at the hands of the Radical Republicans that dominated Congress due to the crimes and misdemeanors of 17th U.S. President, Andrew Johnson. This was the first impeachment; the second would be 130 years later towards Bill Clinton.
