Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a free state and New Mexico and Utah could decide. No sale of slaves would be allowed in Washington D.C would be allowed. Texas would give up claim to the New Mexico Territory. Also the Fugitive Slave Act required citizens to apprehend runaway slaves and this created a victory for the south. -
Election of 1856
In 1854, Republican party forms and is protesting slavery. James Buchanan defeats John C. Fremont. James Buchanan is apart of the democratic party. -
Reconstruction Plans
Lincoln's ten percent plan was never put in place because of his assassination. The Radical Republicans stepped in and they were going to punish the south. They had Black Suffrage, 50% loyalty, and the 13th amendment was put in place. -
Election of 1860
The Democratic party splits over the issue of slavery. The Republicans nominate Abraham Lincoln and he wins the election. Lincoln won without any electoral votes from the south. -
War Starts
Abraham Lincoln sends food and medical supplies to Fort Sumter and David sends orders to take Fort Sumter. On April 12th, 1861 P.G.T Beauregard takes open fire on Fort Sumter. -
Battle of Bull Run
The battle took place in Virginia. The Union was winning until Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's Virginians made a stand. The Anaconda plan was put in place during this battle. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
General Burnside attacked Robert E Lee during this battle. The union lost 13,000 men while the CSA only loses 5,000 men. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This proclamation was to free all enslaved people in rebellions states. This keeps foreign help from the CSA away. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This was a turning point in the war and Lee's army was looking for supplies. Three days nearly 50,000 killed and the Union had a victory. The Gettysburg address was given by Abraham Lincoln and this speech was about why we fight and the dedication to those men. -
Chancellorsville
This battle would between Joe hookers and Lee. This was Lee greatest victory by a 12 mile surprise attack in the woods. Jackson was shot in the left arm and dies from his wounds. This was Lee's most costly victory. -
Election of 1864 ( End of War )
Lincoln defeats McClellan (Copperheads), ending any hope of a negotiated peace for the south. Ulysses S. Grant surrenders to Lee at the Appomattox Court House. -
Abraham Lincoln's Death
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Abraham Lincoln was attending a play and was shot from behind. John Wilkes Booth made a quick escape after the assassination and was later killed by Boston Corbett. -
Military Reconstruction Act
This split the south into 5 military zones and it was run my the secretary of war Edwin Stanton. The Tenure Act was put in place during this act. President Johnson fires Edwin Stanton and the House of Representatives files impeachment charges -
Congress Steps In
The 14th Amendment is put in place during this time. The 14th Amendment states that all persons born in the United States were citizens and that any former CSA officer is prevented from holding political office. -
1868 Election
Grant wins the election and the 15th Amendment is put in place. The 15th amendment states that no citizen can be denied the right to vote based on color, race, and previous servitude.
