The Whigg party is defined as a former political party in the United States; formed in 1834 in opposition to the Democratic Party; advocated a loose interpretation of the Constitution and high protective tariffs.

They believe that the institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy; but that the promulgation of abolition doctrines tends rather to increase than to abate its evils.

    Lincoln marries Mary Todd
    Abraham and Mary (nicknamed; Molly) were married in Springfeild, Illinois at the home of her sister. Four sons were born of the union. Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas (Tad). Edward died at the age of 31/2, William died at age 11, and when Tad died at the age of 18 in 1871 it threw Mary over the brink into insanity. After a brief stint in a mental institution she lived with her sister Elizabeth in Springfield, Iliinois. Mary Todd Lincoln died there at the age of 63 in 1882.

    The start of the Civil War
    Abraham Lincoln's election as President in 1860 that finally tipped the nation into a state of civil war. When Abraham Lincolin became President the southern states seceded and war began.
    Fighting began at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 when Union troops were fired upon. Lincoln called on the states to 'preserve the union' and states needed to take sides. Virginia was the first to declare secession, followed by others.

    The Homestead Act, enacted during the Civil War in 1862, provided that any adult citizen, or intended citizen, who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of surveyed government land. Claimants were required to “improve” the plot by building a dwelling and cultivating the land.     President Lincoln issued this first printing of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in general orders format, as an order from the Commander-in-Chief to the armed forces. Because he had direct control over the Army, the President thus made it unnecessary to go through Congress to activate the Proclamation. The preliminary version differs from the final version of January 1, 1863, in placing a greater emphasis on the preservation of the Union as a motivating force for the Proclamation.

    A witness to the assassinationOriginally, John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and a Confederate spy from Maryland, had formulated a plan to kidnap Lincoln in exchange for the release of Confederate prisoners. After attending an April 11 speech in which Lincoln promoted voting rights for blacks, an incensed Booth changed his plans and determined to assassinate the president.
