Texas Declares Independence
After Mexico gained independence from Spain, its new government allowed settlers into Texas. These settlers were mostly American, and tended to disagree with, or outright ignore Mexican laws. In the following years, Mexico would ban new American settlements, and in 1835, attempt to confiscate a cannon from Gonzales, a town in Texas. When the citizens of the town refused to give it up, instigating a fight, war for Texas independence would begin. In 1836, Texas declared itself independent. -

Trail of Tears
In 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, legalizing the removal of Native American groups living east of the Mississippi. In 1838, the Georgia state militia forced the Cherokee west into Indian Territory; present day Oklahoma. The journey was 800 miles long and at least one fourth of the population died along the way. Their trek was later named the Trail of Tears. -
