Plessy vs Ferguson
During this time, discrimation was a big issue. This case came up shortly after the Civil War. This Supreme Court case lasted almost 60 years. Plessy was arguing that they, African Americans, had the right to share public facilities with the "white man". The courts stated that the Jim Crow Laws, that were in place that did not allow African Americans if not born in the U.S. to vote, did not violate the 14th Amendment. They also stated that it is okay because it is "Seperate but Equal". -
U.S.S. Main Blows Up
This ship was mysteriously blow up. It was on its way to retrieve Americans that were in danger, before the U.S. declared war on Spain. The ship was in the Havana harbor when it was blown up. Many of the soliders were either killed by the explosion, drowned, or passed away by injuries suffered from the ship. -
Spanish American War
On this day, the United States offically declares war with Spain. The United States really wanted to Cuba but Spain told them that they would rather see it sink then sell it. This war lasted about 15 weeks and the United States gained Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Treaty of Paris is the document that ended the war. -
Platt Amendment
This was an attempt to protect the independence of Cuba. Instead of protecting Cuba, it angered the people and the U.S. was acting like Spain did. Some of the amendments said Cuba couldn't make treaties to limit its independence, U.S. could intervene in Cuba, Cuba couldn't go into debt, and the U.S. could buy land for naval stations. -
First World Series
The Pittsburg Pirates won the series in the end. The first team that descided to get it all started was the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Later on, even Negro Leagues were forming.(they did not have interracial teams at this time) There were mass amounts of people living in cities and they needed new forms of leisure and this is how baseball came about. -
First Flight
The first flight took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The flight only lasted a few seconds but it was the first flight to have lifted off the ground. The two famous men that accomplished that were the Wright Brothers.(Orville and Wilbur) -
Bull Moose Party Created
This Party was developed from a spit Republican Party. Theodore Roosevelt came back from Africa hoping to just jump back into presidentcy. William Taft was current president and did not want to step down. Roosevelt got upset and descided to form his own party which was known as the Bull Moose Party. Roosevelt contributed to the Progressism by doing square deals, trust busting, and he was a member of the Rough Riders -
Clayten Antitrust Act
This Act was passed by Woodrow Wilson while he was in Presidentcy. There were many trusts going around and the Progressives wanted it to stop. He created the FTC. The Act stated that companies could not buy stock if it was going to create a monopoly. -
19th Amendment
This Amendment allowed women the right to vote. Prior to this, women argued the issue. They said that the 14th and 15th Amendment already guarenteed them the right to vote. The men thought otherwise. This movement was taken to the Supreme Courts. The Court system ruled that just because you are a citizen does not mean you have the right to vote. This movement was fought all through out the Progressive Era.
