    The Signing of the Louisiana Purchase
    On this day, the President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, signed a treaty for the purchase of 828,000 miles of land from France for $15 million which is known as the Louisiana Territory. The land extended from from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada.

    The Alamo battle
    On this day a group of Mexicans numbering in the thousands and led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna began an invasion of the fort.Though vastly outnumbered, the Alamo’s 200 defenders–commanded by James Bowie and William Travis and including the famed frontiersman Davy Crockett–held out courageously for 13 days before the Mexican invaders finally overpowered them. The men were seen as heros to the Texans because they won the battle for their independece from Mexico.

    On this day in 1847, the first rescuers reach surviving members of the Donner Party, a group of California-bound emigrants stranded by snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
    They are famous because they went through many hardships such as being stranded in the snow, seperated from the whole group, death, disease, starvation, and resorting to canibalism for survival.
