From the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, steam-powered engines were very popular. Steam engines powered trains, boats and even huge ships. The Titanic was steam powered.     In 1764 the spinning jenny was invented by James Hargreaves. He was a British carpenter and weaver.     In 1794, Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin. This machine made it much easier to remove the seeds from cotton. This in return helped the south gain more money and save more time.The cotton gin was an important invention because it dramatically reduced the amount of time. Imperialism was the domination of the economic, political, and cultural life over another nations or countries.     By 1914 most of Africa is under European control. They basically own all of the natural resources and soon begin to industrialize Africa.Land access to Africa was equally problematic from the North with the Sahara Desert presenting a formidable natural obstacle to Europeans.
