Lee loses a battle against Grant and is trapped in Va. Lee then signs the surrender for the army of Northern Virginia. The terms were: Lee's men could go home after recieving a parole pass, all their weapons would be burned except for the officers swords and side arms which were considered to be personal property, and any other personal property such as horses and mules may be kept. -

The Reconstrution
Reconstrution was a change and rebuilding of the South and the entire nation as result of the Civil War. It also sparked the rise of the Klu Klux Klan and White League who attacked freed men and supporters of black rights. Riots against giving rights to the freed men broke out across the south and freed men were lynched, or killed on the spot without a trial for a supposed crime. -
The Industrial Revolution
This was a time of economic growth and increased industry. During this period, some of the first skyscrapers were built with steel which had recently become more affordable. Overall, industry increased, more railroads were made, and things like the car were mass produced in this era. -
The Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American War started when the U.S.S.Maine exploded on the way to Havana Harbor to protect Americans in Cuba from the war. The cause of the explosion was unexplained, but the U.S.
Goverment blamed it on the Spanish. During the war, most of the people died from disease. As a result of this war, the Spanish authority had been overthrown in Cuba, the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The U.S Great White Fleet was able to be engaged for the first time. -
The acqusition of Hawaii
In 1898, with the help of U.S troops, Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown by a revolt. In 1897, an attempt to annex Hawaii as a state failed. However, In 1898 it became a U.S. territory and was later annexed as a state in 1959 in a vote which did not give Hawaii the option of independence. -
The creation of the Panamal Canal
Surveys for building the canal started in1850 and the French started digging in 1881. However,it stopped due to natural disasters, financial difficulties, workers dying, and the possible building of another canal.In 1903, the U.S. opened negotiations with Columbia to finish building the canal but the Columbian senate failed to pass an act to do so.In response,the U.S successfully provoked a rebellion in Panama to become independent and in 1904 building restarted and it opened in 1914. -
World War I
World War I started when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assainated by a Serbian extremist. Military allegiances and other tensions brought in other countries such as England, France, the Ottoman Empire, and Italy. On April 6, 1917, the United States got involved when a commercial ship, the Lusitania, was sunk in May 1915. What also provoked U.S. involvement was the Zemmerman telegram offering an allegiance with Mexico to fight the U.S and give them some of their lost lands. -
Prohibition and the Roaring 1920's
Prohibition was the 18th Amendment banning alcohol from the U.S. The reasons for it were an anti-alcohol movement, and to stop the occurrence of veterans of World War I getting drunk and abusing their wives. However, many illegal bars sprang up and criminals were able to make a lot of money off of it. During the 1920's, people started listening and dancing to more jazz; girls, known as Flappers, were doing things that used to be morally incorrect. -
The Great Depression and New deal
In 1929, the stock market crashed and caused food prices to go down so farmers made less money lowering the demand for jobs. The banks lost everyones money. The New Deal was a series of domestic economic programs which created public jobs, recoverd the economy, and prevented another depression from happening. These acts were supported by President Franklin Rosevelt. -
World War II
On September 1,1939 Germany invaded Poland which had a large amount of Jews living there. France and England declared war on Germany on September 3rd for invading Poland. Although the U.S. was netrual, they boycotted Japan, Germany, and Italy, and also supplied the allies with weapons. -
Pearl Harbor
On the morning of December 7,1941, 414 Japanese air planes launched from six aircraft carriers attacked Pearl Harbor. Since it was early in the morning, most of the soldiers at Pearl Harbor were just waking up. The attack was planned in three waves but only two of them were launched. The Japanese bombers had practiced bombing replicas of Pearl Harbor. -
Cold War
The Cold War was a 44 year long tension between the Western and Eastern powers. What mostly divided the countries involved was that the Western, such as America, was a noncommunist republic while the Eastern powers, such as the Soviet Union, was communist. Although no shots were fired during the conflict thery both mass produced weapons and bombs. Also during this time, both countries raced in overall advancements. -
The Korean War
North and South Korea were two nations divided by Communism and Democracy after World War II. North Korea invaded South Korea and inflicted heavy casualties and forced them back to the Pusan Perimeter. However, with the help of international troops, 88% of which were American, North Korea was forced back. Then, with the help of Chinese forces, the American and South Korean forces were pushed back to the 38th Parralel where the border of the two countries is now set. -
The Vietnam War
Also known as the Second Indo-China War, the North Vietnamese relied on Gorilla warfare. They would often do hit and run tactics in which they melted into the background or hid in the dense jungle. They also ran away into countries such as Cambodia, and often pretended to be civilians. -
The Gulf War
It was code named Operation Desert Storm which was an allegience of 34 nations led by the United States. The purpose of it was to drive the Iraqi's out of Kuwait which they had recently invaded. Countries like Suadia Arabia, the United Kingdom and Egypt gave financial support to America. The process of driving out the Iraqi's began with an aerial bombardment and eventually ground troops. -
September 11th 2001
On Tuesday September 11th 2001, Al Queda, an Islamic terrorist group used 19 Al Queda opretives to hijack four airplanes. Two of them crashed into the World Trade Center, one crashed into the Pentagon, and one crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. A total of 2,996 people died as a result of the attacks. -
Operation Enduring Freedom
In response to the September 11th attacks, the United States military invaded Afganistan and deployed some other troops in other countries to fight terrorism. The U.S teemed up with several other countries to fight the Taliban. The U.S. also teemed up with the Northern Alliance, which had been fighting the Taliban for years. In May of 2011, the United States Seal Team Six successfully killed Osoma Bin Laden the Leader of Al Queda. -
Operation Iraqi Freedom
Before the war started, the U.S. and U.K. claimed that the Iraqi's had weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, both countries invaded and occupied Iraq but now fight a stubborn insurgency. During the war, the infamous Saddam Hussien was captured and hung.
