Causes of the Civil War Timeline

  • Northwest Ordinance

    Governed by the articles of confederations and soon to be the constitution in 1787 this territory will latter be the west of the united states. This event was an important cause that lead to the civil war because slavery was forbidden in the north west states.
  • U.S Constitution - 3/5th Compromise

    The 3/5th compromise was that every 3 out of five slaves count as population. This was important because the compromise rose tensions with the north.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    This act could put people who help slaves escape in jail or fine them. This is a cause because the north extremely opposed this act.
  • Invention of Cotton Gin

    The cotton gin is an invention that separated the cotton from the cotton seeds. this helped spreed slavery and increased the price of a slave.
  • Ban of Slave Importation

    The ban of slave importation also know as the slave trade helped stop the slaves being traded. the south was upset about this act.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri wanted to enter the union as a slave state and the north was opposed so main evened it out by joining as a free state. this was important because this compromise created the 30 36 n line.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

    The Nat turner rebellion was when a slave named Nat turner rebelled on his owner. This was important because this gave other slaves the idea to rebel.
  • South Carolina Nullification Crisis

    The nullification crisis was when there was a tariff on cotton and south Carolina threatened to ceded and Henry Clay wrote a compromise to keep them in the union.this was important because south Carolina later secedes from the union.
  • Organisation of Underground Railroad

    The underground railroad was a trail that was famously know as an escape route for run away slaves. Thins was an important cause to the civil war because a lot of slave escaped here and this would rase tensions in the south.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    The Wilmot Proviso was a document that proposed that all the territories the U.S gets will not be slave states but this act was never passed. This is very important to the cause of the civil war because the south was enraged by the though of this act.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    This treaty created peace between mexico and the U.S. This treaty has given the U.S more territorys.
  • Compromise of 1850

    California wanted to enter the Union as a free state. the fugitive slave act was created and the slave trade in Washington DC was abolished. The bindery dispute between New Mexico and Texas was solved.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin Published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was write by Harriet Beecher Stowe. and changed the minds about slavery of people from the north and enraged the people of the south.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    This act allowed for the people of Kansas and Nebraska to decide them selves if they wanted to be free or slave state. This made the people of the north mad because it ditched the 30, 36 line.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    The people in Kansas fought over whether or not they should become a slave state or not. this was important to the civil war because it rose tensions in the north and the south.
  • Charles Sumner Attacked

    The congress men Charles summer was attacked by Preston brooks with a cane for the thing that he said about the south and slavery. this was very important because this is were the north and the south start to have bigger confrontations.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott was a slave that when his master took him into a free state though that he was free and sued his owner. Dred Scott was denied ans the supreme court said that slaves were property.
  • John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry

    John Brown was an abolitionist he wanted to raid Harper's ferry in hope that he could create a slave uprising. He failed because the local slaves did not rebel. Brown was sentenced to be killed. this was important to the civil war because the Souths tension rose.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln won the election of 1860 and did not get a single slave state electoral vote. This is important to the cause of the civil war because after Lincoln this leads to south Carolina seceding and the rest of the slave states follow.
  • South Carolina Secedes from the Union

    After Lincolns election south Carolina secedes from the union and all the slave states follow and create the confederate states of america. this is a major cause to the civil war because south Carolina then attacks fort sumter.
