WWI Events: Germany Attacks and US Enters War
The Germans fire shells filled with chlorine gas at Allied lines. This is the first time that large amounts of gas are used in battle, and the result is the near-collapse of the French lines. However, the Germans are unable to take advantage of the breach. The US also entered the war in April 6, 1917 because German submarines were making attacks on ships containing American passengers. -

WWII Events: War in the Pacific & D-Day
- Japan invades China, which initiated war in the Pacific.
- On D-Day, June 6, 1944 , General Dwight Eisenhower led U.S. and Allied troops in an invasion of Normandy, France. The armies fought their way through France and Belgium and into Germany while Russian troops fought from the east. On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered.
