The Missouri Compromise
Importance To Civil War- The Missouri Compromise was an agreement between the North and the South and passed by Congress in 1820. Maine would enter the union as a free state and Missouri as a slave state, this maintained the balance of power between free and slave states in Congress. Dred Scott Decision
Importance To Civil War- Dred Scott was a slave who sued his slave owner John Emerson. Scott followed his master to the north where slavery was illegal. The Dred scott decision was when the supreme court declared that Scott was just a slave and not a citizen but property, and that property had no rights. Importance To Civil War- The Treaty Of Hidalgo was Mexico regonizing that Texas was part of the US and that the Rio Grande was the border instead of The Nueces river like Mexico wanted in the first palce. Importance To Civil War- After the Mexican-American war, the US Gained Land. Importance To Civil War- The Fugitive Slave Acrt said that any slave that had escaped to the north could be taken back to their masters, unless they made it to Canada were they would be truly free. Importance To The Civil War- The Sacking of Lawrence was when a group of Pro-Slavery Activists lead by Smauel Jones went to the town of Lawrence KA (which was founded by Anti- Slavery Citizens.) The Pro-Slavery Citizens attacked their town and started what is now known as Bleeding Kansas. Abraham Lincoln's Election
Importance To Civil War- President Lincoln was against slavery in the United States. The South thought that Lincoln would free all of the slaves, which the Southern economy relied on. This was important to the Civil War because there were many new abolitionist members of Congress, and many Southern states had already moved toward secession from the Union, creating tentions in the U.S, due to Seccesion and Slavery.
