    The Missouri Compromise
    A border between free and slave states. All states south of Missouri are slave states. All states north of Missouri are free states. The Missouri compromise was a very important thing at this time in history. Many southerners wanted all states to have popular sovereignty so that they could try to get more slave states than free. click here
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    It was the belief that all territory taken from mexico should be free. The U.S. fought for territory that was owned by mexico, and all northerners wanted free states. There was a large debate over what these new states should be. There would be fights over the states that could lead to blood baths. So the decision over what these states decided was huge.     They got rid of slave trade in D.C. and they also got California to be a free state. In return the south got the fugitive slave act. The fugitive slave act was a important part of our history.     The fugitive slave act of 1850 allowed officials to arrest anyone accused of being a runaway slave. Some would carry fake papers that claim they are a free slave. A lot of northerners thought that this was highly unfair because they saw the rule as the government having too much power.     It was a book that was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book was about slavery and it showed northerners what slavery was like in the south. click here
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Popular sovereignty was introduced in Kansas. Many believed that they could fight for what they wanted Kansas to be, free or slave. This ended up in chaos as riot started forming all around Kansas. The war went from 1855-1861. This flyer shows that people were encouraged to flow into Kansas to fight for the decision. click here
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    In March 1857, in one of the most controversial events preceding the American Civil War (1861-65), the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in the case of Dred Scott v. Sanford. The case had been brought before the court by Dred Scott, a slave who had lived with his owner in a free state before returning to the slave state of Missouri. click here

    Lincoln douglas debate
    Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen Douglas ran for president in the election of 1858. Douglas ended up winning the election, and Lincoln would gain popularity. click here

    John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry was an effort by armed abolitionist John Brown to initiate an armed slave revolt in 1859 by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. click here
