The Arpanet was born
The Arpanet is a network that connects different computers together to interact with eachother. Bob Taylor created this in 1966 with a million dollar budget from Charlie Herzfield. The first time it connected UCLA and Stanford. -
The first IMP is connected to the first host
The IMP, or otherwise known as the packet switching node, is the crucial hardware for sending and recieving bursts of data. This was the first generation of gateways or routers. Leonard Kleinrock said, "The September event was when the infant Internet took its first breath." -
The first personal computer is released
Apple released the Apple II which is the first personal comuputer, created by Steve Wozniak. Shortly after IBM released a computer, the IBM PC, to rival Apple's. The Apple II was the longest running mass-produced home computer series. -
E-mail was created
Ray Tomlinson created a system that let users send mail to others using ARPAnet. He used the @ symbol to separate users from their computers. Normally mail could only be sent on the same computer. With the invention of e-mail Tomlinson made this possible. -
The first security breach
The first security breach came by a student, Robert Morris, who was trying to wander around the Internet unnoticed. It ended up shutting down all of the network systems. This was just supposed to run statistics and record statistics and search for other systems it could duplicate. There were many bugs in this system which made it target system vulnerabilities and create more copies than intended. This sent out denial of service attacks on infected systems and made them useless for 90 minutes. -
Creation of the World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau created the World Wide Web. It combines the hypertext, the personal computer, and the network. It was the emergence of browsers that let users navigate the web and maneuver through text and images on screen. The first web browser was Mosaic. -
First dating site
Match.com was the first online dating site. It was launched by Electric Classifieds, Inc. The cost of membership was only $9.95 per month. The initial users of the service were given lifetime memberships for signing up to build up the database of users for other paying customers to be able to match with. -
The first social media networking sites
SixDegrees.com was the first social networking site that let users make profiles and connect with other users. This was the inspiration behind other media sites like Myspace and Facebook. Users could send messages and post bulletin board items to help people find connections with others through their own connections. -
The first MP3 sharing site was created
Napster was the first music sharing site. You could download albums and MP3s. It was declared illegal in 2000 because of the copyright content and had to filter out the copyright content. -
Facebook was created
Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg that limited the website's membership to Harvard-only students but later expanded to colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League and Stanford. It later expanded to other students at other universities and then high schools.
