Timeline of the American Revolution

  • The French and Indian war

    A war that lasted from 1754 to 1763. It was a long struggle between the French/Native Americans and the British colonies.
  • The Proclamation of 1763

    A proclamation made in 1763 that put a limit on how far colonists could travel. It was mostly to limit war.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act was put into motion in 1764, which put taxes on things like molasses and sugar. It also put a very harsh punishment on smugglers
  • The Quartering act

    The quartering act was put into effect in 1765 and made it so that colonists could not refuse having to keep British Soldiers in their homes, or else they would be punished.
  • The Stamp act

    The stamp act was passed by Parliament in 1765 and made it so that people had to buy tax stamps for all kinds of activities and goods. Mostly things involving paper.
  • The Boston Massacre

    Started as a protest, but when the colonists started getting angry, shots were fired and people ended up dead.
  • The Battle of Alamance

    The Battle of Alamance was a war in 1771 against the Regulators. The Regulators fled from the militia led by Governor Tyson.
  • The Tea Act and the Boston Tea Party

    The Tea Act, passed in 1773 made it so that the East India Tea Company could sell tea directly to the colonists which made tea cheaper. The Boston Tea Party was a revolt when a group of colonists dressed up as Indians and threw an entire shipment of tea overboard into the Boston harbor.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts were a set of acts passed by Parliament in 1773 that strengthened other acts, closes the Boston harbor, abolished the upper house of the Massachusetts legislature, cut power of town meetings, and also included the Quebec act, which claimed a lot of land.
  • Fighting at Lexington and Concord

    The battles that started the American Revolution in 1775. The shot heard around the world was fired at these battles.
