Timeline of Laws: Exceptional Learners

  • 1954: Brown Vs. Board of education

    The Brown v. board of education was a case that help establish the "separate but equal" education during the civil rights movement. Additionally, this case impacts the special education because schools were also segregating children with disabilities and parents had to voice out their concerns (“The History of Special Education Law in the United States by Peter W.D. Wright, Esq. - Wrightslaw”)
  • 1975: PL 94-142 Education for all handicapped children act

    P.L 94-142 is a law that guarantees free appropriate public education to students with disabilities (Hallahan et al. 54). This impacts the special education by making sure all students with disabilities have free access to public education.
  • 1982: Hudson v. Rowley

    A case involving Amy Rowley who was deaf who were the courts decision was that appropriate education for a deaf child with a disability does not necessarily mean education that will produce the maximum achievement. This case impacted the special education today by making sure to permit the students the benefit of education that is instructed.
  • 1990: (IDEA) Individuals with disabilities education Act

    The IDEA ensures that each student with disabilities have the right to a free, appropriate education. This impacts the special education today because it identifies the students and provides every student with disabilities an appropriate education for free for the parents.
  • 1990: (ADA) Americans with disabilities act

    This act is the civil rights for individuals with disabilities ensuring nondiscrimination in a broad range of activities. This impacts the special education today by offering equal opportunities such as public accommodations and transportation to name a few.
  • 2002: NCLB: No Child Left Behind

    The No Child Left behind law is an attempt to improve the academic performance of all students including those with disabilities. This impacts the special education today by making sure the students with disabilities receive a high quality education and allows the students to benefits from their education.
  • 2004: (CDC's) The centers for disease control and preventions

    The CDC's is a campaign that encourages to early identification of developmental disabilities. Additionally, this impacts the special education in today's society by identifying the students earlier in order to provide an effective education for those with disabilities.
  • 2004: (IDEIA) Individuals with disabilities education improvement act

    The IDEIA is a reauthorized act that guarantees services to individuals with disabilities. Additionally, the description of the laws are the same to IDEA, which is to grant individuals with disabilities the right to a free public education. This impacted the special education by making sure parents are at no cost of public education for students with disabilities and grant the students services.
  • 2015: (ESSA) Every student succeeds act

    The ESSA replaced the NCLB, which requires students with disabilities to participate in the standard test of academic achievement. Furthermore, ESSA impacts the special education today by making sure schools are accountable for students with disabilities to learn and achieve in their education. Additionally, ESSA provides an opportunity for individuals with disabilities.
  • 2017: Endrew F. Vs. Douglas county school

    This case helped increase the benefits for districts by providing students with disabilities to meet FAPE. Additionally, this case enable an appropriate education based on the child's circumstances. This case impacts the special education today by improving and providing an education that is in light of the child's circumstances.
