    My mother remembers this film, she says it impacted many woman at the time but she always told me she had mixed feelings about what the message was of this flim. Young girls internalize these messages and construct their identity and worldview, one informed by this social narrative. Girls grow up into women who believe that in order to get what they want (love, value and recognition) they must show some skin. This expectation is inherently dehumanizing, discriminatory and humiliating.

    117 violent deaths women and girls in the city my father grew up in. He told me he at the time wanted to go visit to protect my cousins and tia's. Very scary time for my father's hometown. Ciudad Juárez became infamous for a wave of attacks beginning in the 1990s that left hundreds of women dead over the course of a decade.

    Selena's murder was a tragic death in the hispanic community. My mother exactly remembers her thoughts about the death. My mother remembers how a Radio personality Howard Stern mocked Selena's murder, burial, and her mourners and criticized her music, playing her songs with gunshots in the background, causing an uproar among the Hispanic population.

    A civil jury in Santa Monica, California, unanimously found Simpson liable for a wrongful death. Famous case of the late 90's. Simpson was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to both murders. As expected, the presiding judge ordered that Simpson be held without bail. The media was insane, my parents remember it.

Finally this was over.
