  • Alphabet soup

    When I was around 4-5 years old my mom decided to give me alphabet soup for dinner. Since I was not the best at writing or even reading at this time, I would make up words and tell my mom what they would mean.
  • grandparents trying to read to me in English

    My grandparents would constantly visit me in the United states. They are from Chile so obviously they ont know a word of english, I remember the first time my grandpa came here, he and my grandma wanted to help me with a reading assignment. They grabbed my book and began to read. Although all they said was gibberish, it led me to work on reading and translating spanish.
  • Me and my friend got in trouble

    In first grade I remember I had just made a new friend. We would always talk and even eat lunch together. One day I pulled out one of those cartoon books and we both started reading in funny accents to fit the characters. My teacher was not glad we were interrupting the class so she made us be quiet.
  • I could finally read I Spanish fluently

    Growing up, I was surrounded by Spanish speaking people. My first language was Spanish but, because I was not entirely learning the language in school it took me a little longer to learn how to read it. I remember at this time my grandma gave me a book and for the first time ever, I was able to read it fully.
  • I loved spelling and vocab tests

    In around 4th grade my teacher would always give us spelling tests and vocab tests. Although everyone in my class would hate them, I would always look forward to taking them. I loved the idea that I would be learning more about the English language even though I could speak it perfectly.
  • 5th grade was hard

    5th grade was brutal. Not only was I entering a new school but, the work load increased immensely. I remember my teacher giving us so much work to the point where it was pretty useless. Although I hated going into school that year, I always looked forward to an English lesson of the day. It was considered an easy A.
  • I was above reading level for my grade

    In 7th grade I was put into a regular Ela class. Obviously it was pretty easy for me. One day, my teacher at the time called me up to talk to her. She told me the based on my test scores, I was above the average reading level for a regular 7th grader. She then told me I was eligible to take accelerated English.
  • English was my favorite subject

    English was my favorite subject
    In 8th grade I realized that English had become my favorite subject in school. I loved to read and write, and I overall had fun learning this subject
