Part of Andrew Jacksons indian removal policy. The Trail of Tears is the journey named by the Cherokee people because of how devastating it was. -
Sutter's Fort
The fort was a 19th-century agricultural and trade colony in the California area created by John Sutter. Sutter's Fort became important in the establishment of the state of California because John Fremont had the Mexican governor taken there and held as he declared the Republic of California and put up the first bear flag. -
Preemption act
was a federal law approved on September 4, 1841 during the early presidency of John Tyler. It was designed to appropriate the proceeds of the sales of public lands. -
Mexican-American War
It was a fight between the US and Mexico over the annexation of Texas. Americans wanted to settle in the mexican territory of Texas, and Mexico let them, but the Mexican government did not want the texans having slaves, which started a fight. -
Bear Flag Revolt
Charles Fremont led a lot of people to try to take over and form an independent nation called the California Republic. They managed to take over the town of Sonoma shortly until the US army came to Monterey and officially took over CA from Mexico. -
Fugitive Slave Law
A law created that allowed slave-hunters to take alleged fugitive slaves without the process of the law and stopped anyone from helping escaped fugitives or stopping their recovery. It was created so that slaves would be brought back to their "Masters." -

Was a series of bill aimed at resolving the territorial and slavery controversies coming from the Mexican-American war. -
Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase was the area of Mexico that Santa Anna gave to the U.S. for $10 million in 1853. America bought it because people thought that the best route for a railroad was in this part of Mexico. -
Bleeding Kansas
The United States left the decision of whether or not slavery would be legal up to the state of Kansas. There was so much argument in the state, that a kind of civil war broke out. -
Dred Scott Decision
The Dred Scott Decision was a case in which the Supreme Court found that a slave named Dred Scott who had lived in a free state and territory where slavery was not welcome, was no longer entitled to his freedom. This case was important because it resulted (according to the ruling) that all blacks are not citizens of the United States, and had no way to become citizens. This meant that just because a slave went North, didn't mean that they were free. -
Harpers Ferry
John Brown raided the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry. He wanted a slave revolt. As a result, he was hanged 2 months later. -

The Gettysburg Address is a speech delivered by Abraham Lincoln at the November 19, 1863. it was given to dedicate a portion of the ground at Gettysburg Pennsylvania, as a National Cemetery for the men who died in the Battle of Gettysburg. -

Gave African-American men the right to vote.
