Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin flies a kite during a thunderstorm to prove that lightning is electricity. In 1752, on a dark June afternoon in Philadelphia, the 46 year-old Ben Franklin decided to fly a kite. With the help of his son, William, they attached his kite to a silk string, tying an iron key at the other end. Next, they tied a thin metal wire from the key and inserted the wire into a Leyden jar, a container for storing an electrical charge. -

James Watts designs a more efficient steam engine
James Watts (19th of January - 25th of August 1819) designs a more efficient steam engine. Watts introduced a design enhancement, the separate condenser, which avoided this waste of energy and radically improved the power, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of steam engines. Eventually he adapted his engine to produce rotary motion, greatly broadening its use beyond pumping water. It was also a step forward to helping with more advanced transport. -

WW I ostensibly started over the assassination of Austro-Hungarian Prince Ferdinand in Sarajevo,Yugoslavia. It however was an excuse for the European powers to resolve territorial issues long festering. The "Austro-Hungarian Empire" was basically German states and Yugoslavia was dominated by Serbia. They had longstanding serious differences that were an excuse to wage war. Russia and the other European states were locked into treaties with Serbia. World War 1 ends with the defeat of Germany.
