United States payed 15 million to receive the territory which extends west from the Missississippi River to the Rocky Mountains Napoleon, the leader of France, was in financial trouble due to war and was willing to give that huge chunck of land for a little price jefferson wanted to expand America and eagerly bought the land. -

Lewis and Clark set out too explore the unknown territories of the Louisiana Purchase. -
War of 1812
United States declared war on Britian's interference and prevetion of American shipping to Europe and over their interference of America's westward expansion. Many important events took place during this war. For one, Washington D.C. got captured by the British and the White House and Capital Building were set on fire. Another event that happend was Francis Scott Key wrote the Star-Spangled Banner as he watched Britian's attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore. -

First Public Railroad System
Construction began on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This is the first public railroad in the U.S. It was a key factor in America's westward epansion and it made trade much easier and less expensive. This threw America into the Industrial Revoloution as welll as changed the face of this once primitive land. -
Trail of Tears
The US Army rounded up all members of all tribes. In the fall of 1832, Chief John Ross reluctantly took his people from the forts where they were being held on the western border of Missouri, and they walked to Indian Territory (witch is now Oklahoma), losing more than half their numbers in the process. The Trail of Tears is the name the Indians gave to that journey. -
The Alamo
On February 23, 1836, the arrival of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army outside San Antonio nearly caught them by surprise. Undaunted, the Texians and Tejanos prepared to defend the Alamo together. The defenders held out for 13 days against Santa Anna's army. William B. Travis, the commander of the Alamo sent forth couriers carrying pleas for help to communities in Texas. The Oregon Trail (the start)
Many settlers traveling west of the US carried everything they owned on pack mules & wagons. The easiest way to travel across the mountains was through the Oregon Trail. The trail was first used by settlers in 1841. They mainly wanted to go out there because of gold. -

Mexican War took place in America's effort to gain Cailfornia and other territory in the South west. Like The Almo and Taxes. -
Cailfornia Gold Rush
Gold is discovered at Sutter's Mill in Cailfornia. After news spread that gold had been discovered there, thousands of Americans dropped everything they had and moved to Cailfornia. -
The Peak of the Cailfornia Gold Rush
It was the peak og the Gold Rush, thus, creating the name the Forty-niners for the many miners that searched for gold there. This event greatly increased America's westward expansion. -
Gadsden Purchase
Gadsden purchase was made for $10,000,000 from Mexico. -

Confederate States are formed
11 states had seceded from the U.S. and the Confederate states were formed. Jefferson Davis was elected as president of them a day later. -
The Civil War
The Civil War was the conflict between the North (the Union) and the South (the Confederacy) over the expansion of slavery into states and over the presercation of the Union. This war was had a higher fatality rate out of all of the wars fought in America combined. This sad event shaped our government for the better and opened the eyes of the Americans to the brutality of slavery -

Spanish- American War
Well, it was a short war. It was caused because the Americans went to Spain to ask for Cuban independence, on behalf of Cuba. Spain rejected that. The United States sent in a ship, the USS Maine, when then exploded. The media hyped it up and said Spain did it, but nobody is really sure about that, and then we went to war.
