President Madison takes office
Britian was impressing sailors, blocking ports, and arming native americans. President Madison did not join the office at a really good time for the United States. -
War Hawks take power
Henry Clay and John C. Calhum, became leaders in The House of Representatives. Their supporters were called war hawks. -
Relationship with Great Britian worsen
In the spring of 1812 the British tell the United States that they are still impeaching sailors. Native Americans in the Northwest began attacking the frontier settlements. -
Congress declares war on Britian
Presidents previous to Madison all did there best to make sure that they did not go to war with Britian or France. By the time Madison took office , the british had started impressing sailors. Americans were mad at Britian for arming native americans in the northwest. Congress soon had no choice but to declare war. -
America is not ready for war
Jefferson has cut spending money on the miliary making the military weaker. The Navy only had 16 war ships, and less then 7,000 men for army. -
British blockade American ports
By 1814 the British Navy had 135 war ships blocking the American ports. The blockades stayed there untill the end of the war. By the end of the war all ports were closed. -
Invasion of Canada
American troops under General William Bul, invaded from Detroit. Fearing that he did not have enough troops, he retreated. British General Isacc Brock took advantage of the retreat. With the help of Native Americans and his British soldiers. They captured over 2,000 American soldiers. This was a big defeat for the United States. -
U.S.S. Constitution scores a victory
Nicked named the "old iron side", The British was the first to fire at the U.S ship. This was a fierce battle between ships. This battle was a big win for the United States. -
Battle of Lake Erie
United States and Britian both knew the importance of Lake Erie. It was a three hour battle in Put - In - Bay. Americas ships were badly damaged. United States Commander Oliver Perry had to switch to another ship his being badly damaged. His team kept fighting until they won the war. The British were then forced to leave and went to Detroit. General Harrrison and his troops followed the British. They then beat the British in the battle of Thames. -
Battle of Horeshore Bend
Creek warriors attacked 7 south settlements in the United States. Andrew Jackson took command of the U.S Forces, and defeated the Creeks. The treaty that ended the fight forced the Creeks to give up milions of acers of land. -
Washington D.C attacked and burned
Britian's strategy was to attack the U.S Capital. Dolly Madison ( President's wife) gathered all the important papers that she could find and fled the White House. The British set fire to 7 goverment buildings including the White House. The United States army could not defend the capitial. -
The writing of the Star Spangled Banner
On the back of an old envelope, Key wrote a poem, a poem that told the story of his night watch. This poem soon became popular, Later it was set to music. In 1931 Congress made it the national anthem, -
Treaty of Ghen
Britian tired of war, and the talk of peace started to spread, On Christmas Eve Britian and United States signed a treaty to end the war. -
The convention of Kartford
Groups of federalists joined the convention, They talked about the suggestion that New England states succed from the United States . Delagates debated, and when the news of the treaty arrived, they found out that they had won .The convention was over. -
Battle of New Orleans
The treaty took 7 weeks to get to the United States . The United States and Britian fought one more battle, the battle of New Orleans. United States under the forces of General Andrew Jaskson where led them to there stunning victory over Britian.
