President Madison Takes Office
Britain became angry when James Madison was elected as president. So then Britain decided to give the Native Americans weapons in the Northwest. Americans became angry with Britains actions of not only giving the Native Americans weapons but also impressing their sailors. -
War Hawks Take Power
Henry Clay of Kentuckey and John C. Calhoun of South Caralina became part of the House of Representatives .Their group of supporters were called the War Hawks.The War Hawks are the people of America that want to go to war with Britain. Britain on the other hand wanted to keep the peace so their trade with America could be safe. Even though Britain wanted to keep peace they could not afford to give up what America was asking them to so they continued on with war. -
Relatoins with Great Britain Worsen
Britain and Americas relationship was at stack when Britain told America that they would continue to impress Americas sailors. Then the Native Americans started to attack Americas frontier settlements. While Americas citizens were worried about their reputation. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
Britain knew tat they were not ready to fight another war with America while they were already fighting a war with France on the other side of the ocean. Britain had no other choice than to fight the war, they could not meet the demands of America. so then Native Americans decided that they would take over protecting Canada. -
America is not Ready for War
When Jefferson was in office he decided to cut off and shorten the military. This only allowed America to have 16 warships ready for war. The army altogether had fewer than 7,000 men. America was no where near ready for war. -
Britain Blockades America Ports
In the first days of war Britain stoped people and supplies from getting in and out of an area. This is called a blockade.In 1814, British had 135 warships blocking almost all ways of people and supplies from coming in and out. -
Invasion of Canada
Before the war had begun the War Hawks had also wanted an invasion of Canada. The War Hawks thought that Canadians would fight with them against Britain. Then when the war had begun they did invad Britain only to retreat. William Hull thought that he did not have enough soldiers, so British commander General Isaac Bronck surrounded the Americans. They captured more than 2,000 Americans. -
U.S.S. Constitution Scores a Victory
America had a very immportant warship called the U.S.S. Constitution. This warship did a very important thing the U.S.S. Constition beat Britains warship Guerriere. The U.S.S. Constitution got a nickname "Old Ironsides" due to a British artillery fire that bounced off the Constitutions thick wooden hull. -
Battle of Lake Erie
Britain and America both wanted to control Lake Erie . Britain and America fought in Put-In-Bay(the Western part of Lake Erie). During the battle one of Americas Ships was damaged so Oliver Hazard Perry switched to a different ship in the middle of the battle . Eventually Britain retreated to Canada, America won Lake Erie. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
The Native Americans lost in the South. Then Creek Warriors attacked American settlements. Andrew Jackson commanded American forces in Georgia. America won this battle and tha Native Americans were forced to sign a treaty that made the Native Americans give us millions of acres of land. -
Washington D.C. Attacked and Burned
Britain had planed an attack on Washington, D.C.. When Britain came into the city of Dolley Madison (the presidents wife)decided to grab the important papers and left the White House. Shortly after she had left Britain set fire to several buildings including the White House. -
Writting of the Star Spangled Banner
A man named Francis Scott Key saw the British attack Washington, D.C.. He saw that the flag was still flying over the fort after the Americans beat off the British.Do to this Francis wrote a poem of what he saw on the back of an envelope called "The Star Spangled Banner". The poem became popular and was eventually changed into a song. In 1931 America made it the national anthem. -
Hartford Convention
A group of federalists decided to meet in Hartford, Connecticut. Some of the federalists said that they should the New England states seced or withdrawal from the United States. Shortly after the news of the peace treaty arrived. After the peace treaty arrived the convention quickly ended. -
Treaty of Ghent
The people of Britain was growing tired of war. The people talked about peace in Ghent, Begium. Then on Christmas Eve they signed the treaty ogf Ghent. The treaty of Ghent ended the war. Then after America got the treaty things went back to the way things were before the war. -
Battle of New Orleans
The news of the treaty of Ghent took several weeks to reach the United States of America let alone the states. There for both sides fought one last battle this was the battle of New Orleans. American forces still listened to General Andrew Jackson. With Jackson America had won a huge victory over British in the battle of New Orleans.
