    This is a timeline explaining what events led up to the civil war during the 1850's. many bad things occured which caused the nation to become undivided and start a civil war.
  • Henry Clay constructs the Missouri Compromise

    Henry Clay constructs the Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state, and Maine as a free state. The compromise did not please many people. This compromise kept the Union together but caused an uproar in many peoples opinions in both the south and the north. The civil war was edging closer.

    Henry Clay decided that California would be admitted as a free state to the union. also this compromise allowed the new mexico and utah territories to decide whether or not they wanted slavery to occur. this compromise also outlawed the slave trade in washington D.C. many southerners and northerners were furious with this compromise. they agreed it was unfair to both sides and civil war certainly in the minds of the people at this point.

    The act said that the settlers in the new territories can allow slavery if they prefer. this made many people upset. many settlers moved to kansas for violence. this was a violent beginnig to the civil war.

    The descision stated that the african americans could never be american citizens. it also said that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional. This descision made slave holders happy. it made them think that salvery would last longer. The northerners were surprised at this reaction in court. this led to even more arguements and problems leading up to the civil war.

    the Election of 1860 was between abraham lincoln and two democrats, Stephen douglass and john beckinridge. Lincoln won the election and then the south departed from the Union. This created to sides of the country and it certainly agravated all southereners to make them not trust the governement. this is when the civil war started.

    confederates in charleston south carolina caused an uproar when they fired at ft. sumter. it was a long battle but the federal union of the fort had to surrender. the fort was defeated but this ended all compromise attempts. this was not time for compromise, this was time for war.
