Stephen F. Austin
In 1821, Stephen F. Austin led the first of several American settlers into Texas. The land was described as a "fertile area as good in every respect as man could wish for, land first rate, plenty of timber, find water-beautifully rolling along the Brazos River" (p 288). -
Mexico Invites U.S. Settlers
"To prevent border violations by horse thieves and to protect the territory from Native American attacks, Mexican government encouraged American farmers to settle in Texas" (p 289). Texas was owned by Mexico at this time. -
Abolishing Slavery
Sense Mexico had previously abolished slavery, in 1824, they insisted that Texans free their slaves. -
1824 Mexican Constitution
In 1824, Santa Anna suspended the 1824 Mexican Constitution and imprisoned Austin for "inciting Revolution" (p 291). -
Taxes on American Goods
In 1830, Mexico sealed its borders and "slapped" a heavy tax on the importation of American goods. -
Texans Attack
In 1835, Texans attacked. They drove Mexican forces from the Alamo. -
Battle of Alamo
Texans declared their independence from Mexico while the Battle of Alamo was still happening. -
Constitution
They ratified a constitution based on that of the United States. -
Santa Anna Victory
Santa Anna's troops executed 300 rebels at Goliad. -
American Victory
Six weeks after the defeat of the Alamo, the Texans struck back. They defeated Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto, led by Sam Houston. -
"Lone Star Republic"
In September 1836, Sam Houston became president of the Republic of Texas, also called the "Lone Star Republic." -
Texas as a Republic
Sam Houston invited the United States to annex or incorporate the Texas republic into the United States. -
38th State
Texas became the 38th state in the Union.
