Wu Zetian takes the throne
After Li Shimin died, the power was passed to his 9th son, Li Zhi. Li Zhi married his father's concubine, Wu Meiniang, who changed her name to Wu Zetian. Li Zhi dies soon after, and Wu Zetian successfully enthroned and dethroned her two sons, then declared herself Empress-- creating the Zhou Dynasty. -
Emporer Ai forced to abdicate the throne
In 859, a large peasant uprising severey weakened the Tang Dynasty, and then Emporer Ai was forced to abdicate the throne by Chancellor Quanzhong, ending the Tang regime. -
