    Decision on whether Louisiana Territory should be a free or slave territory. Missouri applied to be a state that also eld slaves. This upset the balance of 11 free and 11 slave states. This wwas restored by giving the north Maine (free) and the south Missouri (slave). Territory above Mason-Dixon was forever closed to slavery.

    Decision on whether land of Mexican cession be free or slave. California bacme free, while New Mexico and Utah were allowed to decide. Slavery was abolished in D.C. The south was given the Fugitive Slave Act which allowed slave catchers to enter north and take back run-away slaves.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's cabin. It was written on the accounts of run away slaves she encountered while visiting kentucky. It sold 500,000 copies in 5 years.

    Northern and Southern settlers moved into kansas. There was a constant battle between pro and anti slavery forces. People began to kill voters on the oppesing side to win the election,

    The Dred Scott
    A slave that had lived in free states wanted to declare himself a free man. The court ruled against him, because he had moved back to Missouri, a slave state after 2 years. It also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional. The north refused to accept the ruling and two of the three branches of government failed to do anything to resolve the issue. The democratic party was also falling apart.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    Led 21 men from maryland to virginia in a n attempt to issolate the Arsenal at Hapers Ferry and destroy the slave system of the south. They cut off telegraph lines and captured the local armory.
    Held up to 60 hostages, ended up with 9. Brown was tried and convicted of treason and hung on December 2nd 1859.

    The country was in the midst of chooseing another president. Several canidates came forth but the one with the most electoral votes was Abrahm Lincon. After the election South Carolina seceded from the union.
