Christopher Columbus landed on Ayiti, and claimed the island for Spain. He renamed it La Isla Espanola. It Became the first Spanish settlement in the Americas. -

Several of the Carib Indians began firing arrows at the returning boat and some members of each side were hurt and killed. Columbus named the area Cabo de las Flechas, or Cape of the Arrows. -

San Martin Leads Southern Liberation Forces
In northern Argentina, the Army of the north had been defeated by the Spanish, clearly proving that the route to Peru through the Upper Peru (Bolivia) would be too difficult. In July of 1816 San Martin finally got approval for his plan to cross into Chile and attack Peru from the south from President Juan Martín de Pueyrredon. -
