Trained and provided funding for teachers of children with disabilities. -
Elementary & Secondary Education Act (P.L. 87-110)
This act as part of President Johnson’s campaign for ‘War on Poverty’. It offered federal funds to school districts to create programs for students with disabilities and from low income families. This act also formed the Office of Special Education. -
Handicapped Children's Early Assistance Act (P.L. 89-750)
Created the first early programs for preschool aged children with disabilites. -
Developmental Disablilities Services and Facilities Construction Amendments were passed
Placed responsibility on states to organize programs and services for people with developmental disabilities. -
Diana v. Board
Ruled that IQ tests are biased against minorities and the poor -
Wyatt v Stickney
Ensured that disabled persons placed in an institute must recieve education or treatment. -
The Rehabilitation Act (P.L 93-112)
The first pieces of legislation to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities. The law specifically worked to prohibit discrimination for programs that received any federal backing or were federal programs to begin with and was broken up into a series of sections. -
Lau v. Nichols
The court ruled that a group of Chinese speaking children in a California school were denied equal opportunities in education. -
Education for all Disabled Students act
This Act gave free and appropriate education for all disabled children, provided stronger parental rights and ensured each student an individual education plan. -

The Education for all Handicapped Children Act (P.L. 94-192)
Changed the face of public education by providing free and appropriate education for all students with disabilities. It also gave stronger parental rights and instigated the concept of an individualized education plan. -
Education for all handicapped children's Act amended (P.L 98-199)
Expanded coverage to children under 5 and transition to the workplace. -
