After centuries of being known as moons 1-4, scientists decided to name them:Io, Collisto, Europa, and Ganymede.

Pioneer 10 reaches its closest point to Jupiter.
The spacecraft Pioneer 10 reached within 81000 miles of Jupiter's cloud tops. While there, it took photographs of Jupiter's moons, providing rare and difficult to obtain information. It discovered dozens of new moons orbit Jupiter. Jupiter, the only four known before were the ones disvovered by galileo.

Voyagers 1 and 2 are launched

Voyager 1 and 2 reached their closest points to Jupiter.
January of 1979 the Voyager 1 bagan taking pictures until April, at which time Voyager 2 took over until August of that year. Both voyagers take thousands of pictures. Their greatest discovery was that the moom Io is extremely volcoanic, which was a big surprise, thoughpeople had already been studying the moons for hundreds of years.

Galileo arrives at Jupiter
The Galileo spacecraft arrived at Jupiter this date. It made the closest rord flight near Io, the most volcanic body in the solar system, and Europa. It also brought back the first proof that there might frozen bodies of water there.
