Rocket Summer
The story begins with the narrator telling of harsh Ohio winter. Icicles form wherever they have enough water. The cold air breaks into people's skin. Off at a launch pad within the town, there is a rocket prepared to go on a mission. The rocket then takes off leaving behind pink, fiery clouds and a sense of hope in the town. -

Two martians named Yll and Ylla discover an astronaut named Nathanial York. He is a common looking human; blonde hair, blue eyes. Ylla dreams about this meeting ahead of time. It becomes and issue for her husband Yll because he becomes worried. -

The Earth Men
Three men from earth arrive on Mars and discover a sort of Martian settlement. After multiple groups of martian meet them, there is a plan devised. Some of the martians decide to talk to these men later and try to find out anything they want to learn. Mr. Xxx however gets very paranoid and things that they are just hallucinations. He shoots the crew to make them disappear and they dont. He then shoots himself. -
The Taxpayer
A man, named Pritchard, goes down to a rocket launchpad in Ohio. He yells at the people on the other side of the fence. He says that he is a taxpayer and has the right to go to Mars. The people on the other side of the fence laugh at him. The man yells at the people that an atomic war is going to happen. He is arrested and is just able to see the third expedition be launched. -
The Third Expedition
A third rocket ship is sent to Mars. Mars has transformed from the land described in the first few chapters to a place very similar to Earth (including oxygen). The men of the third expedition do not know why Mars seems like Earth and assume that it was the doing of the first two expeditions or people had previously colonized Mars. A year after the third expedition, a fourth expedition arrives on Mars, and they discover a many centuries old Martian city, along with fresh Martian corpses that had fallen to chicken pox. The Green Morning
A man arriving on Mars named Benjamin Driscoll passes out due to a low Oxygen level and is nearly sent back to Earth. He refuses to return and decides that he will plant trees so that the Oxygen supply is increased. The Naming of Names
This chapter goes into how names on Mars are formed. Lands’ names al formed by people and the thing the people did (Hinkston Creek, Lustig Corners, Black River, etc.). Most predominant appear to be “Red Town” named from the blood spewed by the Earth mens’ murder and “Second Town” named for the second expedition. The old Martian names were of water, air, and hills (towns & graveyards took this pattern). -
Usher II
William Stendahl is an avid book lover, wealthy from an inheritance, who has come to Mars to build the house of his dreams: a recreation of Edgar Allen Poe's House of Usher. Stendahl has been banned from building the house on Earth by the Office of Moral Climate, a group whose governmental position is to ban and destroy anything which suggests "ghosts, vampires, fairies, or any creature of the imagination." A man and wife are about to go to bed and there is a sound outside. The man goes to investigate. He tells his wife it is their dead son, Tom. This thing acts, looks and even sounds like Tom. The Off Season
Sam Parkhill opened a hot dog stand. He comes in contact with a Martian who has a propostition for him. Sam freaks out and hurts the Martian and his friends come after him in a "car" chase. Sam eventually gets tired and stops. The Martians hand him a deed to half of Mars. -
The Luggage Store
The owner of the luggage store heard the news on the radio that there was going to be a war on Earth. After he hears this news he goes out looks at Earth in the sky. The owner can not believe that war will soon breakout on Earth. Father Peregrine tells the shopkeeper that it is because the owner isn’t on Earth. The owner questions Peregrine on his response. A huge influx of customers soon swarm trying to get luggage to go home. -
The Watchers
At nine o’clock in the evening, earth seems to explode in front of the Martian settlers’ eyes. A morse code message is sent to them, with news that the atomic stockpile of Australia prematurely explode, wiping out the continent; further, London and Los Angeles have been bombed and the settlers should come home. At 3 a.m. , a crowd flocks to the luggage store, whose proprietor stayed open for this eventuality; he sells out of his goods by dawn. -
The Silent Towns
Walter Gripp goes into town in search of love. He finds nothing in the town. He decides to spend his time wandering around, having fun. He finally meets this women for a date. She turns out to be not his type physically. He falls into panic and runs away. He later realizes that living alone isnt so bad. -
The Long Years
Captain Wilder comes back from the outer planets to find nothing left. John Hathaway, however, is living "happily" and invites Wilder in for dinner. Captain meets the family who looks the same as they did years before. Nothing has changed it seems. Hathaway later reveals that they are robots and Wilder finds that the real family died 19 years prior. John goes into a panic and has a heart attack and dies. The robots show no emotion through this. -
There Will Come Soft Rains
This lone, automated house is left in California. Nothing exists around it. It goes through its daily routine every day. A dog appears at the front door. The house lets it in and the dogs has a fit and dies. Later that evening a fire erupts due to a storm. The house catches fire and cant be put out. The house eventually collapses and all you hear from the rubble is "Today is August 5, 2026" -
The Million Year Picnic
In October of 2057, one of the last existing families on Earth travels to Mars to escape the utter destruction left by the atomic war. The father, William Thomas, brought his wife and three children to Mars to allow them to start a new life in which they can choose where and how they live. Mars is their new home. Earth is gone.
