On this day in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt is born in New York City.

After arriving in the harbor of Havana, the USS Maine explodes and sinks. At the time, it was believed to be from an attack from the Spanish. It turns out that USS Maine sank due to the forward gunpowder magazines exploded. This event was one of the main reasons on why the United States went to war with the Spanish.

Due to the belief that the Spanish were at fault for the sinking of the USS Maine, a war broke out between them and the United States. Roosevelt, at the time, was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. When the war broke out, he resigned from his position as Secretary in hopes to be able to form a volunteer regiment. After getting the approval, Roosevelt formed the Rough Riders.

On this day, Theodore Roosevelt takes office as the Vice President with William McKinley as the President.

President William McKinley is shot and killed, leading Roosevelt to take his oath in Buffalo, New York. Roosevelt is still currently the youngest president to ever be sworn in as Commander and Chief of the United States.

On this day, 140,000 coal miners would walk off and leave their job sites. This would be the start to what we know as the coal miner strike. As winter approached in October of 1902, Roosevelt invited coal miner operators and union leaders to the White House to attempt to stop the strike. Later, on October 21st, the strike finally ended.
