Nobles force King John to sign an agreement.
Rights included equal treatment under the law and reial by on peers.
Limted the power of the monacarch guaranteedthat no one would be above the law.

Mayflower Compact

Nov 11, 1620

Pilgrims(plumouth colonists) realized they needed rules to govern themselves in order to survive in a new land.
Came up with wrtten plan for government signed by 41out of 102 men on the ship.

Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

Jan 24, 1639

America's first written constitution
There document was called for an assembly of elected representatives from each town to make laws.
It gave men more rights to vote and made more men eligible to run for elected positions.

Glorious Revolution

Jun 10, 1688

Parliament remove King James II ad replaced him with his daughter.Mary
Showed that parliament was now stronger than the Keng peace ful transfer of power.
No ruler would have more power than Parliament.

English Bill of Rights

Further limted the monarch's powers.
Guaraneed 3 rights
1.Free election to parliament
2. Right to a fir trial

John Locke

Argued that people were born free equal and indepedent.
Believed people passessed rights called natural rights that no government could take away.
Rights include life,liberty,and property.

Baron de Montesquieu

Developing the idea know as Separation of Powers
Dividing the government into branches so that no one part can become to powerful or theaten indivdual rights.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Argued people alone had to decide how they should be governed
