  • Nurse Education

    Nurse Education
    -Dr. Valentine Seaman arranged lectures for nurses who took care of maternity patients
    -Dr. Joseph Warrington wrote a book titled The Nurses Guide Containing a Series of Instruction to Females who wish to Engage in the Important Business of Nursing Mother and Child in the Lying-In Chamber that taught women how to care for mothers during and after childbirth.
  • Nurse Pioneer

    Nurse Pioneer
    -The most famous pioneer was Florence Nightingale. She guided a group of nurses to the Crimea to take care of the British soldiers during the war
    -After she returned to England, Ms. Nightingale started her own nursing programs so that nurses could gain the proper education to care for individuals
  • The Demand for Caregivers

    The Demand for Caregivers
    -When people were sick, their family and friends took care of them
    -Eventually the hospitals started caring for people who didn’t have caregivers
    -This led to the demand of qualified caregivers
  • Nurses During the Civil War

    Nurses During the Civil War
    -At the outbreak of the Civil War, there was an immediate need for nurses to take care of the wounded soldiers
    -About 20,000 nurses came to the rescue
    -This prompted the birth of a training program offered by the Women’s Hospital of Philadelphia
    -6 month training program for nurses
    -1st class graduated in 1869
  • "Nightingale Schools"

    "Nightingale Schools"
    -1873: 3 Nursing schools were started
    -New York Training School @ Bellevue Hospital, Connecticut Training School @ the State Hospital, & Boston Training School @ Massachusetts General Hospital
    -1900: 400-800 nurse training schools were in operation
    -African Americans who wanted to become nurses were not allowed to train with white nurses. They had to train in their own schools until about the mid-twentieth century.
    -Male nurses were discriminated against during this time as well
  • Obstetrical Nursing

    Obstetrical Nursing
    -It is said that this specialty of nursing started in the mid 19th century
    -Before nurses were available, women gave birth at home
    -They were attended to by female relatives and friends who had no formal training
  • Modern Day Nursing

    Modern Day Nursing
    -In 1960, the nursing profession began to branch off into multiple specialities
    -Nurse Practitioners began to appear on the health care scene
    -Federal financial support became available for nursing programs
  • Role of the Obstetrical Nurse

    Role of the Obstetrical Nurse
    -Obstetrical Nurses assist women during and after delivery
    -May provide teaching instruction to women about their reproductive and sexual health issues
    -Assist providers during prenatal screenings
    -Provide cervical exams for patients who are in labor

    NCLEX
    -The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) was implemented in the US on April 1, 1994
    -By the end of the 1994, more than 155,000 people had taken the exam
    -This exam tests the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are required for entry-level nurses

    -I learned that at some point in history, women were training for 6 months to be a nurse
    -I learned that Florence Nightingale had a huge impact on the history of Nursing
    -I have learned how to create a Timetoast presentation via Zoom
    -This assignment was somewhat difficult because I am not used to recording myself
