In 1891 Dr. James Naismith created basketball to condition young athletes during the cold. He divided a class of 18 into 9 player teams. The game consisted of soccer balls and fruit baskets and the objective was to make it into the basket. -

The first Basketball game
the first basketball game took place at Springfield college and the score finished at 1-0 with only one goal scored. until later was a hole put in the bottom of the basket so the ball could go through. -
First international games
Basketball developed very quickly in Europe in 1909. The first large European event was held in 1919 in Joinville-le-Pont near Germany, and the United States won. -
The formation of FIBA
Founded in Geneva in 1932. It's original name was Federation international de Basketball Ametuer. It now has a World Cup and is known worldwide. -
The American Basketball Association
Founded in 1967 and contained 11 teams. It established the three-point line and used a red white and blue ball instead of brown. It disbanded after the NBA, ABA merger in 1976. -
The ABA-NBA Merger
Following the 1976 season both the NBA and ABA reached a settlement to combine into one league called the NBA. It also added four new teams to the league; the San Antonio Spurs, the Denver Nuggets the Indiana Pacers and New York Nets. -

Starting in 1985 the NBA had amazing marketing success through michael Jordan and other great stars. Now many sponsors are also helping the NBA continue its thriving success and help to market to other fans out there.
