Invention - Tea (2373 BC)
Legend has it that tea was discovered by the Chinese emperor Shan Nong in 2373 B.C. While he was in his garden a few tea leaves fell into his boiling drinking water which then gave off a rich, alluring aroma. The Emperor, upon drinking this brew, discovered it to be very refreshing. Brewing fresh tea leaves in hot water quickly spread.

Invention- Paper(AD)
One of China's four great inventions is paper. It is said to have been invented around 105 A.D. It was invented by Cai Lun, an official of the Imperial Court. He based his paper on a variety of fibrous materials.

Invention- Gunpowder (AD)
Another one of China's Four Great Inventions is gunpowder. Gunpowder was invented at around 142 A.D. When Chinese alchemists invented gunpowder, it was a mistake. They didn't intend to make it. Invention- Compass (BC)
Another one of the Four Great Inventions is the magnetic compass. It is said to be made around 221-206 B.C. Chinese miners were mining for copper and iron when they came across a natural mineral, magnetite. Magnetite attracted iron and always pointed north if suspended.

Historical Event- Grand Canal (BC)
The Grand Canal, also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, is the longest canal in the world. The oldest parts of the canal were said to be built in the 5th century BC. It reaches over 1,400 miles long.

The Great Wall of China is the only manmade structure that can be seen from space. Construction on the Great Wall started in the 7th century BC. It reaches over 13, 171 miles long! The Great Wall of China is made up of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials. China's First Man in Space
Yang LiWei was China's first man in space. He was born on June 21, 1965. He was launched into space aboard his Shenzhou 5 spacecraft atop a Long March 2F rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center at 09:00 CST (1:00 UTC) on October 15, 2003. Yang's craft landed in the grasslands of the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia at around 6:30 CST (22:00 UTC) on October 16, 2003.

China holds the Olympics!
China hosts the Olympics in 2008. The hosting city is Beijing. The opening ceremony was on August 8, 2008. The closing ceremony was on August 24, 2008. It was held in the Beijing National Stadium. China was the 22nd nation to hold the olympics.
