More that 3.2 million Americans are unemployed, up from 1.5 million before the October, 1929 crash. President Hoover preaches optimism stating "all the evidences indicate that the worst effects of the crash upon unemployment will have passed during the next 60 days." -
Food Riots
"Food Riots'' broke out in the U.S. Several hundred men and women smashed the windows of grocery markets in Minneapolis. They smashed and stole fruit, canned goods, bacon and ham. Seven people were arrested and it took 100 policemen to contain the riot. -
Bank of the United States Collapses
The United States Bank in New York collapses. At the time of the event, the bank had over $200 million in deposits.
